F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

    Hi,

I spend few hours trying to find how to install my scanner.
My printer/scanner is Brother DCP-7055, connected with USB2
I installed with Brother script downloaded here

Printer works fine, however when I try "simple scan" I get the error message:
    "No scanners detected"

    Run as root: same issue
I tried the "rule.d" file trick, same issue.
I tried the "scanner group" trick, same issue.

    Packages installed:
    - brscan4
    - sane-backends (I added manually)
    - sane-backends-libs
    - sane-frontends (I added manually)
    - brscan-skey
    - simple-scan

Did you definitely install the printer/scanner version as opposed to the printer only?
Do you have some kind of scanner program installed? Xsane is the most common.

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

I installed the both with the script.
I have simple-scan but can try xsane right now

    Edit:
    With xsane:
    No device available

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

    Possibly SELinux or firewall?

    http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/li...rect=on#f00101

Also, try as root which will help make sure it's not a permissions problem.

Are you using the Gnome desktop? I know that when I've used other desktops (though this was with HP printers and the HPLIP package) it assumed I had certain packages that were installed with Gnome, but weren't installed with a minimal window manger--so I was getting errors, and it turned out that all I needed was to install a different package.

Make sure you have sanebackends installed and see if scanimage -L, run as root, shows anything.

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

Just to let you know you are not alone with this problem. I am suffering the same. I installed the drivers yonks ago. Since then I have (around Jan 15th) done a FedUp from 20>21. I have scanned lots of images on 28/29 January (from the dates on the files). I had a kernel issue, for which I stopped a few services. Now I find I cannot scan. I have not altered anything but it is probably related to the upgrade to Kernel 3.18 or the services I have stopped.

I will keep you updated if I find anything out.

It looks like this is not the Kernel after all. I guess I just jumped to conclusions after having spent a couple of weeks in what seemed like a battle zone.

I just uninstalled all the Brother Drivers (using the uninstall scripts generated by their install script) and then re-installed them. Everything is working for me now. I do not know what caused the problem.

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

    Thanks Paulf for your comments.
Could you tell me the exact way you installed again.
Could you tell me what are now the installed packages related/with words "sane" and "scan"

    @smr54
    I run Fed21 Mate 1.8.1
The printer has USB connection: Not a firewall issue.

As they say in the Brother link, I tried :
Copy the following files under /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib/.
    For brscan4 Users:
    /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1.0.7
    /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so
    /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so.1
=> same issue (user and admin)

    I disabled SELinux
=> same issue (user and admin)

Now I removed all with the provided script
    Code:
    $ su -c './uninstaller_brscan-skey'
    Password:
warning: file /opt/brother/scanner/brscan-skey/script/brscan_scantoemail-0.2.4-0: remove failed: No such file or directory
warning: file /opt/brother/scanner/brscan-skey/script: remove failed: No such file or directory

    $ su -c './uninstaller_brscan4'
    Password:

    $ su -c './uninstaller_DCP7055'
    Password:
warning: file /usr/local/Brother/Printer/DCP7055/cupswrapper/brcupsconfig4: remove failed: No such file or directory
warning: file /var/spool/lpd/DCP7055: remove failed: No such file or directory
Maybe something went wrong when install.

Paulf, I am waiting your answer to try again to install.

    Thanks to each of you

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

I got the same results when uninstalling!

Please note I am using dnf rather than yum to install/update my system, when I remember. This does occasionally result in some differences. The system with the problem was upgraded to fedora 21 from 20 using fedup, not the best way to ensure everything is consistent.

    My Currently installed packages:

How did I install? I ran the brother install script (as root). I have done this on many systems and unless I want an IP/Wireless link I think I default all the answers. The only change is when using IP/Wireless I do not default the URI where I answer N and then give the IP address.

Everything then works. This has been done on two systems since I had the fault. I do not do anything else. On SE Linux I leave it enabled. I fix any problems that happen but on Fedora 21 I have not had any (and one system I tried was a fresh install of fedora 21).

Just an a note I am using a MFC-J6520DW. This is a different model to your own. That is the only difference I can see.

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

    Thanks Paul,
    I checked the conf/packages and re-run linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 installer.

Now both printer and scan are working fine.
I don't know what happened previously.

    So thanks again

Re: F21: Brother printer/scanner: No scanner detected

Wanted to add to this post as I was running FC 23. Upgraded to FC 24, then FC 25 and finally to FC 26. The drivers were never removed or updated along the way. Normally I would slick the box (just like a clean install) to do my "upgrades". This time I decided to use the upgrade process using
    Code:
    dnf upgrade --refresh
    dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
    dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=26
    dnf system-upgrade reboot
    , etc.

When the upgrades were completed I was able to print (thinkin' this is sweet everything stayed). Scan, not so much. ensured the lib links, drivers, etc still intact.
    Code:
    brscan-key -l
    MFC-J615W : brother3:net1;dev0 : <ip_I_use_for_scanner> Active
    found the device (head scratcher).
    Code:
    scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname HP WebCam virtual device
    only saw my video camera.

Long story short found the link (http://support.brother.com/g/b/produ...=en&content=dl) identified my device MFC-J615W, select linux (of course), downloaded the linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz, followed the instructions to reinstall all drivers.

    Presto-Chango all well again.
    Code:
    [root@localhost scripts]# scanimage -L
    device `brother3:net1;dev0' is a Brother MFC-J615W MFC-J615W
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname HP WebCam virtual device
SimpleScan and xSane found the device and scanning over the network was working again.
Brother takes care of their linux users (again).
