    VLC doesn't open or crash's instantlly

    Hi ;-)

    I had VLC on Freedora19(Fedora-Kernel-Libre) working fine i allso have it on GdNewHat'Hatrack' working fine(same box 2 seperate HDD)I just installed it on Freedora20 and it refuses to open or it crash's the moment i want to use it(viewing a mp4 vid).I did a Yum install & update.After the 1st crash i tried -remove-re install but no success.Unless it's a Xfce bug?
    Parole Media Player ask' to install H.264/MPEG-4 AVC(which is proprietary)i do not want to do that...
    be gratefull for any advice in working around this ;-)

    List the repos you are using .
    The only ones that work right for me are rpm fusion both free and nonfree.

    Re: VLC doesn't open or crash's instantlly

    Following on the suggestion of worried user here is how to see the repos.

    Code:
    - Listing active repos:
    $ yum repolist

    - Listing all repos available:
    $ ls -1 /etc/yum.repos.d/

    - Checking VLC messages:
    Code:
    $ vlc -vvv 'mp4 you are trying to play here'
    ps: Triple verbosity is long, very long, but it should be around the end.

    Re: VLC doesn't open or crash's instantlly

    I think VLC crashes are mostly from using acceleration when you don't have acceleration working properly for your GPU. Don't know what type of GPU you have, but you might need libva for acceleration to work for you. vainfo is a command to check for video acceleration information.

    The ffmpeg library is often the culprit. Try using ffmpeg from rpm fusion.

    Sorry that I don't have F20 installed yet. Waiting on a hard drive...

    Re: VLC doesn't open or crash's instantlly

    I hate Microsoft.
    I can not use (pure) free and open source software, if I want to view a movie or flash toy..
    I must use SOME closed or restricted codex to view a movie. Videolan is NO exception.

    http://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html

    From vlc site

    Provides best-in-class performance, compression, and features.

    Achieves dramatic performance, encoding 4 or more 1080p streams in realtime on a single consumer-level computer.

    Gives the best quality, having the most advanced psychovisual optimizations.

    Support features necessary for many different applications, such as television broadcast, Blu-ray low-latency video applications, and web video.

    x264 forms the core of many web video services, such as Youtube, Facebook, Vimeo, and Hulu. It is widely used by television broadcasters and ISPs.

    free to use

    x264

    x264 is a free software library and application for encoding video streams into the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression format, and is released under the terms of the GNU GPL.

    I use a 686 computer and have no problems using both mplayer and vlc codex.

    I forgot to ask what are you trying to watch?
    A dvd REQUIRES libdvdcss which is a dvd decoder.

    Again thanks to the worlds richest man. If I want to watch a dvd I can use Windows or install a decoder like libdvdcss.

    You need to put quotes around file names that include spaces:
    Code:
    vlc -vvv 'Peuterey Integral Ridge.mp4'

    You might try the options in comment #18 and comment #24 of the following (old) bug report. A segmentation fault is not what I was expecting to see. Note, to use valgrind, you have to install it first. I have not searched bugzilla for current bug reports against vlc. You might want to do that.

    I can tell right now to not waste any time doing so, the bugreport function in Fedora doesn't even allow VLC to be reported it says it uses proprietary drivers and there is nothing to do.

    This is something to report at VLC directly.

    Here is the thing though, I had this problem before and it was because of hardware acceleration, disabling that

    Preferrences -> Tools -> Video - Display -> Accelerated video output

    I can't see where the problem is there, but disabling or changing the video output and filters could give some clues.

    I think you are wrong about that (although maybe I am mistaken). The bug report I listed is against rpmfusion, not fedora directly. You should be able to view and submit bug reports against rpmfusion for libraries and codecs that they use and that are required by VLC such as ffmpeg. Of course this assumes that you are using the rpmfusion repository for such things.

    http://rpmfusion.org/

    Regarding hardware acceleration issues, this is usually caused by using a version of ffmpeg that doesn't have the propriatary codecs compiled within.

    You can report here.
    http://rpmfusion.org/ReportingBugs

    RPMFusion bug tracker
    https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/bugli...uicksearch=vlc

    VLC bug tracker
    https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/

    Reporting here will get you nowhere.

    https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_file_a_bug_report

    Fedora bug tracker
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/

    And of course a backtrace would be nice.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Debugger

    First install the debug files needed.

    e.g.:

    # debuginfo-install vlc-core-2.1.3-1.fc20.x86_64

    ps: it is a big download around 350MB

    Than initialize gdb

    $ gdb vlc

    Then

    (gdb) run

    drag and drop the video wait until it crashes and

    (gdb)bt

    copy and paste because I do not know how to redirect that output to a file yet, sorry about that.

    e.g.:

    Code:
    (gdb) break 10
    Breakpoint 1 at 0x36cb806dc0: file events.c, line 10.
    (gdb) run

    Re: VLC doesn't open or crash's instantlly

    Thanks so much David Batson & Dobbi for your help & very instructive info.

    1/i have booted into the less recent Kernel-Libre Fedora(3.12.9-libre.301.fc20.gnu.86_64) 20 (Heisenburg)

    that has not changed anything...I installed Valgrind..

    Code:
    valgrind -v vlc
    .the info is really quite exhaustive so here's is the tail of it:

    --1798-- used_suppression: 2 glibc-2.5.x-on-SUSE-10.2-(PPC)-2a /usr/lib64/valgrind/default.supp:1286
    ==1798==
    ==1798== ERROR SUMMARY: 104 errors from 43 contexts (suppressed: 2 from 2)

    Vlc opened or rather the window popped up during the process to emmediatly dissapear.
    Preferrences -> Tools -> Video - Display -> Accelerated video output
    did you mean Preferences in VLC ?(cannot access that)cannot find in Applications Menu either.

    ffmpeg is from the rpm-free repositary.(i removed & re-installed)
