Why do you guys prefer Fedora above all?

What makes Fedora stand atop the other distros for you?

Freedom. Adventure. Curiosity. The desire to "make it work". Loyalty to a certain degree as I've been using Fedora since it's inception.

Re: Why do you guys prefer Fedora above all?

I been a Red Hat guy since the early days. Has always worked for me. I like to check out the bleeding edge. Simple as that. I will continue to use it on my development boxes but I am moving away from it on everything else. Having to re-install every 6 months or so has been losing it's appeal when several computers are in play.

I don't use Fedora for my servers, nor now my laptop. I've got Cento OS or Scientific Linux for my servers. Just installed Mint on my laptop. Fedora 20 wasn't playing well with the Wifi on the laptop, so wiped it and installed Mint which is solid as a rock. I've always liked Mint on a USB stick to boot when I needed Linux off of my Windows boxes so now it is installed for real. My Raspberry PIs and Beagle Bone Black run a version of Debian as well as the other embedded platforms at work.

    Fedora gives me

    1. A rock solid development platform with what I consider the best package building software.
    2. It doesn't pervert the original source code like ubuntu (why can't those morons learn to use patches).
    3. Free Redhat subscription entitlement for RHEL releases (perk for being a epel packager).
    4. It doesn't come with defaults settings setup for morons.
    5. it doesn't have crazy ideas like unity or mir (I hope fedora wayland crap doesn't drive me away).
    6. rpm has better dependency tracking than apt.
    7. Users on fedoraforum seem a little brighter than those at ubuntu forum

    Wow, don't hold back Leigh123linux

Started with redhat (and Yellow Dog Linux), Fedora is my comfort zone.

Ubuntu has nice polish... but this F20 (Gnome 3) is amazing. I think Gnome has finally settled down, great smooth system

Re: Why do you guys prefer Fedora above all?

    • Up-to-date software (unlike Debian)
    • Ease of use (unlike Arch)
    • After the first installation, everything worked out of the box (unlike Ubuntu)
    • Upgrades simply work (unlike Ubuntu and derivatives)
    • Incredibly stable (unlike Ubuntu)

It would be almost like heaven if it was rolling release.

I learned one thing: Never recommend Ubuntu as a distribution for starters. This crap prevented me from switching to Linux for so many years until I finally tried Fedora two years ago.

    I like your #7. Add
    8. I also see much more interest in #7 guys helping every level of user, from beginner to someone like me, an old tinkerer who likes a rock solid distribution.

Re: Why do you guys prefer Fedora above all?

I have been using Fedora since F10. I owe a lot to the folks here on the FedoraForum for helping me with my start. I only use Windows for doing final formats on my papers. Otherwise, I use Fedora for everything.

Sooo, I have tested several other distributions and found that Fedora provides stability I want plus a little bit of a challenge to keep things interesting.

Apart from it's stability, its use of current software and pristine source, it doesn't look to me likely to disappear like a lot of smaller distros because of the way its embedded in the Red Hat sphere of influence.

Re: Why do you guys prefer Fedora above all?

I found Fedora to be less time consuming than other distros in the way that it changed less randomly and had a clearer focus (perhaps due to it's RedHat roots). Because of this, I found that more independent software vendors supported it by providing working build systems / rpms / documentation etc...
This kind of consistency is certainly appreciated in the Linux world.

However, on the desktop front, Gnome 3 as Fedora's first class supported desktop environment had kinda screwed it up for me but I guess that is an endemic within the entire Linux ecosystem at the moment (Thus I have ran away from Linux completely (to BSD) until Gnome 3 fscks off).

I prefer Fedora ... due to same reasons as mentioned by leigh123linux and scheme.

The short release cycles and a necessity to "re-install" system frequently was a reason of my worries, but fedup made my life a bit easier

Re: Why do you guys prefer Fedora above all?

I use Fedora by default but I don't really like it (can we trust Red Hat?).

    The alternatives have drawbacks too:
    Debian stable: outdated
Arch Linux, Debian testing/sid: too bleeding edge
Ubuntu, OpenSuse: not free as in freedom enough
Gentoo: you have to compile from source
Slackware: not community enough, and you have to compile from source for extra packages
    FreeBSD: BSD license

The perfect OS does not exist.
