    opening web link from evolution uses wrong browser

    Fedora 19, XFCE, Evolution
    When I click an http link in evolution is does not use the preferred browser (chrome), it uses firefox. In Setting->Preferred Applications I have the browser set to chrome. Using gconf-editor I found a setting that was still set to firefox so I changed that to chrome. But I still get firefox when I click a link in an email.

    I've seen similar behaviour with the help buttons in chrome. They are hard coded to use firefox. However I suspect your problem is because Evolution is a Gnome application and it doesn't respect Xfce's settings.

    What's the output of:
    gvfs-mime --query x-scheme-handler/http
    gvfs-mime --query x-scheme-handler/https

    Thanks you. The output from that showed firefox. Using gvfs-mime --set I was able to fix it.

    Isn't Settings->Preferred Applications->Web Browser supposed to set and read this setting?

    AFAIU, the x-scheme-handler/http (and x-scheme-handler/https) entries in ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list should be set to whatever application you want to handle http* links. Those entries could exist in two different sections of mimeapps.list, [Added Associations] and [Default Applications], I think in both sections x-scheme-handler/http* should be set to the app you want to use; it could be that one section overrides the other, or that the gnome-control-center only changes the entry in one section... etc (personally, I've given up trying to fully understand the whole mimetype handling in Linux...).

    I'm not saying that you are wrong, but Gnome *should* follow FreeDesktop standards and thus this should work. I'm quite certain that chrome help buttons aren't "hard coded" to use fitrefox.

    Examine&Edit
    /etc/xdg/xfce4/helpers.rc

    I don't know what the standards are, but evolution is using the settings in .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

    It appears that the way to change that is with gvfs, or editing the file

    Settings->Preferred Applications->Web Browser appears to touch the mimeapps.list file (time stamp is changed), but nothing in the file is changed.

    ./.config/xfce4/helpers.rc is changed
    and for google-chrome it is set to:
    WebBrowser=custom-WebBrowser
    and for firefox:
    WebBrowser=firefox

    Is this an XFCE bug?
    Is this expected interface pains when trying to run a gnome app in XFCE?
    Am I expected to use a gnome tool to change settings like this?
    Sorry for the noob questions, I've been running ubuntu/gnome and recently made the switch to fedora/xfce.

    Not Chrome help buttons but Xfce ones. They only open Chrome if Firefox has been removed from the system.
