    256MB Ram server. Possible?

    Hi,

    I have a couple of old... computers (can we still call them that?) knocking around the home and I think they'd make ideal servers. They're just small things, restricted memory, the pair of them could possibly have an age of 35 between them (but I'm not certain).

    Specs are around, 15 GB HDD between them (not SATA), 256MB RAM (DDR) each (not DDR3). Processor is uh... I can't tell without taking them apart.

    From what I've seen browsing around the different operating systems, i can't seem to run on on less than 500MB Ram (minimum requirement). Anyone lend me a hand here?

    Thanks!

    ...

    You know what. Lemme just move to america so that I can buy a gun to shoot myself with -_-; then, maybe, just maybe...I'd...RTFM!

    ...doesn't help that I'd completely missed this part. *cough*

    Yes, you should be able to do a text mode server install on them. As simple FTP servers, they will be OK.

    My first Linux machine had 48 MB RAM and when I later upgraded it to 64, it really zoomed...

    apparently not...just tried to install fedora 19 in text mode to a 2.4ghz celeron based HP pavilion desktop (f50) with 256MB ram and it rather abruptly told me it needs 512MB to install.

    I thought after reading the fedora 19 release notes that it was suppose to address the installation resource bloat issue?

    Re: 256MB Ram server. Possible?

    I believe there are workarounds to the installer memory check. Search around on the forum here and you might find it. The text mode install should work fine with 256MB if you kludge the memory check

    Another option may be to put your hard drive in a machine with more RAM and install Fedora on it there, then put the drive back into your older machine. You would need to have dracut rebuild the initramfs since it only builds it for installed hardware now and has one kernel/initramfs installed with more hardware as a recovery kernel. So, you may have to boot with the recovery kernel, and rebuild the initramfs for your regular kernel.

    Could drop a couple drives into and install nas4free on it and turn it into a iSCSI
    Intel Core2 QUADcore 2.4 Ghz
    RAM = 3GIG
    ATI Radeon HD 2400
    Dual 19" monitors
    Windows XP sp3
    DVD+/- RW 16
    HD=250G (OS) 500G + 300G (storage)
