    installing clamav daemon (clamd)

    Hello Community,

I have just started to work with Fedora after many years with Ubuntu. I have installed Fedora 17 32bit on an acer aspire one d270. Everything works fine except I am having problems with the antivirus issue. With Ubuntu I just did :

    sudo apt-get install clamav
    sudo apt-get install clamav-daemon

and my antivirus protection was set up with the daemon running to protect my system in real time.

With Fedora I have been able to install the clamav anti virus system but not the daemon. This means that I can run virus scans on command but there is no continuous background system to protect the system, well just that: continuously. I have dabbled with clamd based on many forum entry recommendations, but I can never get clamd to work.

Can anyone point me to a web site or forum entry that offers straight forward instructions on how to set up clamd, and get it running? or for that matter give me the instructions directly?

    Thanks

You can see what packages Fedora has for clamav using: sudo yum list clamav*

It may be that you need to install the clamav-scanner package.

    Code:
    BASH:~/-> sudo yum info clamav-scanner
    Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto
    Available Packages
    Name : clamav-scanner
    Arch : noarch
    Version : 0.97.6
    Release : 1600.fc16
    Size : 22 k
    Repo : updates
    Summary : Clamav scanner daemon
    URL : http://www.clamav.net
    License : GPLv2
Description : This package contains a generic system wide clamd service which is
                : e.g. used by the clamav-milter package.

    Re: installing clamav daemon (clamd)

    Hi Pablo Two,

Thanks for the advice. I ran

    sudo yum install clamav-scanner

and the installation process ran successfully :

The problem is now I don't know what to do. I run the commands :

Clamav, clamav-scanner, freshclam etc... and all I get is :

    bash: <command>: command not found...

Can you tell me how to activate the daemon? or do I have to install other packages in addition to clamav-scanner?

    Thanks

No, I'm sorry, I can't, as I don't use clamav. From looking at the various clamav packages, it would seem to me though that it would run as a service on F15 and later, likely installed from the clamav-scanner-systemd package. If so, one would start that service with the something like:
    Code:
    # systemctl enable clamav.service
    # syustemctl start clamav.service
The name of the service might be clamav-scanner, I don't know.
    Have you tried:
    Code:
    man clamav
I'm probably not the one to be offering advise/suggestions as I'm nor really familiar with clamav. Surely, though, others on the forum should be able to point you in the right direction.

Maybe it's as simple as following this guide. Should be plenty of other guides on the web. I found this one in two seconds with Google.
