    Stuck with highest resolution

    Hi

On my laptop running with Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT I'm stuck using the highest resolution - 1920x1200 and I can't lower. I tried editing xorg.conf, using nvidia-xconfig, setting it with xrandr but to na avail, I'm just stuck with 1920x1200. Any ideas?

    Code:
    $ rpm -qa *\nvidia\*  *\kernel\*|sort;uname -r;lsmod |grep -e nvidia -e nouveau;cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You didn't mention trying "nvidia-settings". Did you try that?

Yes i tried it, it only allows me to set 1900x1200 or Auto.

I've been partially successfull with changing the resolution.

When I use Randr v 1.1 i can switch resolutions:

    Code:
    $ xrandr --q1
     SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
    *0 1920 x 1200 ( 372mm x 230mm ) *50 51 52 53 54
     1 1920 x 1080 ( 372mm x 207mm ) 55
     2 1600 x 1200 ( 310mm x 230mm ) 56
     3 1280 x 1024 ( 248mm x 197mm ) 57
     4 1280 x 720 ( 248mm x 138mm ) 58
     5 1024 x 768 ( 198mm x 147mm ) 59
     6 800 x 600 ( 155mm x 115mm ) 60
     7 640 x 480 ( 124mm x 92mm ) 61
    Current rotation - normal
    Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal left inverted right
    Reflections possible - X Axis Y Axis
But all of those are wrong, when I switch, they dont take up the whole screen, I see black pillars on the right/left or top/bottom.

I managed to add an extra resolution with this line in xorg.conf

    Code:
    Option "IncludeImplicitMetaModes" "ExtraResolutions = (1440x900),DisplayDevice = LVDS-0"
And now I see an eight entry:

    Code:
     8 1440 x 900 ( 279mm x 173mm ) 62

When I switch to it, the desktop seems to run in the correct resolution, but applications don't if that makes any sense. When I start firefox or the terminal for example it takes more than the entire screen when maximized. Any thoughts?

I don't think the proprietary driver works with randr.

Just replace in the xorg.conf file

    Modes "1920x1200" "1440x900"

    for

    Modes "1440x900"

Doesn't change anything, that would be too easy

    Re: Stuck with highest resolution

Part of your problem is the monitor itself - it doesn't support multiple resolutions, hence the black bars around what you got.

The last issue is where the full size of the Xservers display is larger than than the size of the display screen. Very likely it is the size of the real display.

this is/was used for panning a small display around a larger virtual display (created and used by the X server) due to a mismatch between the physical display size and the requested display size.

Normally both the virtual display and the physical display are the same and this effect is not seen. It is also a problem for things like gnome3 that have oddball characteristics (that stupid "hot corner" crap) that require the panning to the appropriate area before use.

This is a very useful feature when testing - you can create a virtual 4k by 2k display and test your applications without the physical display.
