Question Activation of network connection failed

    Hi All,
Did a yum update yesterday on my clean F17 dual boot installation. There was a kernel upgrade but nvidia upgrade was not included. Rebooted today and tried to get the new nvidia update but am not getting access to the internet. This is a dual boot machine and Win 7 is working fine. I need some pointers on how to resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to connect to wireless network or even wired is not working? What happens when you try to connect to the network manually?

This machine is hardwired to a router and cable modem all of which work fine on the Win7 side.

O.K. You might have tried this already - nevertheless,

    Code:
    ip link set eth0 up
    Does this throw any error?

Re: Activation of network connection failed

    ip link set eth0 up
    yielded: "Cannot find device "eth0"

I do have the full DVD for F17, but without some how to tutorial its not much use to me.

In some computers, it might em1 instead of eth0. There was a thread about this in the forum sometime back. Try 'em1' instead of eth0 to start with ,.

If you don't even know what your interface names are, you can quickly find out with:
    ip link

Good news! "ip link set em1 up" seemed to do the trick. Thanks again, nonamedotc.

If a dual boot with Windows 10, you may need to disable the fast startup options first. See link...

I needed to do this to allow to connect to the internet. Do this first, then install Ubuntu (or reinstall Ubuntu after doing this)

    Linux (Fedora) Firefox 63.0

Re: Activation of network connection failed

    Hi RAX13,
This is going a little weird. It has been almost 6 1/2 years since I started this thread. Times have changed a little bit, I now duel boot with Windows 10 and Fedora 29. My network is still pretty much the same. But today, while trying to do my weekly Fed update I could not access the internet (but had just previously been in Windows and the internet connection was just fine). I was getting "Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'fedora-modular'. Eventually my search led me back to this thread. I did follow your link to the YouTube video. Checked my Windows 10 startup settings which showed that start fast startup was in fact UNCHECKED . So just to complete the instructions I turned off my computer and did a full restart and selected my Fedora option. Low and behold I now had access to the internet using Firefox. Went to the terminal and did my normal "sudo dnf update -y" and everything got updated.

I have often been frustrated by finding my searches turning up solutions for *old* versions of software but to do a search 6+ years later and find a one-day old link that leads to a solution is quite unbelievable.

    Thanks again,
    Divit11

Since your query (though 6 years old) was showing up in the first page of search results for the problem...I thought I'd share a possible solution. Appreciate your response!
