How do I make programs require root password instead of user password?

    Hello everyone,

I'm cylinder57, and I've used Fedora 16 with XFCE desktop for a while (About a week or two) now.

I notice that when I open some programs from the application menu (e.g. Gparted), it asks me for the root password. I also notice that when I open other programs from the application menu (e.g. Authentication, Users and Groups, installing programs in Add/Remove Software, not through command line), it asks me for my user password.

The main question is, "How do I make every program that requires password access to ask for root password instead of user password?" This is not about the command line (I can just type su to authenticate with root password.) This is about the graphical interface.

And... if I placed this thread in the wrong category, I'm sorry about that.

Some of them may be using sudo (kdesudo , and/or gksudo), which is based on sudo, which uses the users password to determine if it is authorized.

This is mostly in some phase out of the root password, but not sure in Fedora.

In F16 when you specify to make your user an admin it adds your user to the "wheel" group. Remove your user from this group and then every program will ask for the root password instead of yours. (after you logout and back in).

Remove yourself from the "wheel" Group

    1. Activities -> Users and Groups
    2. Enter Password
    3. Click Username, Then Properties button
    4. Click Groups
    5. Uncheck the "wheel" check box
    6. Log Out, Log In
