Is your wireless card detected? In a terminal type lspci to see if your wireless card is even detected.

It is bit strange, in my opinion, because even when wireless cards are not detected, I have never had the "Wireless" option vanish (so far).

O.K. There is your wireless card. It is possible that there are some driver incompatibilities with the newer kernel. If wireless still works with the older kernels, then you know where the problem is. You can check to see if there are any known problems. May be you could reinstall broadcom drivers ?
