As a starting point open a terminal. Try
    PHP Code:
    su
    yum clean all
    yum update

I think I"m having the exact same issue right now. I've been trying fixes all over google and none have worked. Decided to check the forums to see if anyone else was having the same issue currently..

edit: I actually installed Fedora about a week ago on the same system and different hard drive (hard drive was used and failed in a day or two). That install had no issues. Now I'm having this issue and I know it's not from just changing out the HDD.

It is probably best to just wait a while. Things will start working again at some point.

Does anyone know possible reasons for this error?

Possible issues wth the repository servers? This sort of thing happens from time to time. Just wait it out. Try later. Then try later still. It will eventually get sorted. It always does.

Historically people seem to beat themselves silly trying to alter files so that the repos will work. Just wait a while.

I'm waiting to install VirtualBox but I'm getting the errors too. That means I'll just have to install VirtualBox later. No big deal.

Seems to be working now. I just updated the flash-plugin / Fedora 16.

Cool Re: Fedora 16 : Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml

I only actually came back to fedora when the Arch repos went a bit fruit-loop a while back ... so there is an upside

Looks like the repos have got over their collective brainfart and are behaving themselves now

There was a short period of time when mirrormanager was sending out old data causing problems. We are still trying to track down the cause, but the data was corrected after only a few hours, so it should be all fine now.

Anyone still seeing this, please try a 'yum clean all' and see if that fixes it for you.

Still not working for me, and yum clean all makes no difference.
EDIT: I seldom post without an edit.

    ok. Can you do:

    URLGRABBER_DEBUG=1 yum update

and paste the last 500 lines or so somewhere? That will likely show the problem, which could be any of:

    - you are behind a proxy, but it's not configured.

    - The time is off on your machine so the ssl cert for mirrors.fedoraproject.org appears not valid yet.

    - You have a routing issue.

    - You have a dns issue.

    etc.
