Problem Installing FC3 on Toshiba Satelliete
Hello everybody,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A70-RT100:
Processor
Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.80 GHz processor, 533MHz PSB
Cache
L1 Cache 12KB/8KB (instruction/data), L2 Cache 512KB
Memory
512MB DDR (512MB x 1)
Display Type: TFT Active Matrix colour LCD display
Size (diagonal): 15.4” Wide XGA TFT
LCD Panel Resolution: 1280x800x16.7 million colours (native)
Graphics Controller
ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON™ 9000 IGP with 64MB DDR shared video memory.
When I boot from the FC3 Disk 1 CD, the initial screen appears, I chose graphic (or text) install, vmlinuz is loading, then about two screens of information (everything seems fine). Then the screen goes black and after about 15-20 seconds the CD Ddrive stops. When I hit enter or space the CD drive starts oving again sand it seems there is some HD activity then all stops and the only solution is to power off the system.
I tried before a Knoppix live CD which works fine. Have you encountered a similar problem before. Any suggestion to what should I do?? Seems very weired.
Thanks,
Theo

I had the same problem on a Toshiba Sat M-30. You need to make sure to finalize the CD, and it should work.

I did that. Still nothing. The system seems to load fine until the moment when (probably) the configuration should start. Is it possible that the iso image i'm using is damaged??

The .iso image is good, I did a md5sum check on it and it matches......So frustrating.....

I tried installing FC3 on a VMware virtual machine on my laptop. It works, at least it goes beyond the blank screen. This way I could pinpoint exctly the moment when it goes blank, right after
Running ....install
Loading ..../sbin/loader
Somehow the screen stops working, even thou I belive the install itself is fine. That is because when I hit enter the Cd drive starts spinning again for about 4-5 minutes, which is consistent with mediacheck that follows after /sbin/loader. Any specialist dare to venture a guess, what could it be? Maybe the ATI radeon 9000? I have run out of ideas......

From the release notes at http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...-NOTES-en.html
"Installation-Related Issues
*
Certain hardware configurations (particularly those with LCD displays) may experience problems while starting the Fedora Core installation program. In these instances, restart the installation, and add the "nofb" option to the boot command line.
NOTE: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean graphical installations started using the "nofb" option will start in English, and then switch to the appropriate language once the graphical phase of the installation process begins.
*
Some Sony VAIO® notebook systems may experience problems installing Fedora Core from CD-ROM. If this happens, restart the installation process and add the following option to the boot command line:
pci=off ide1=0x180,0x386
This option allows the installation to proceed normally; any devices not detected due to the use of this option will be configured the first time Fedora Core is booted."

No problem, glad I could help.
I figure since I have been blessed with trouble free installs under fedora and suse, I should help others in anticipation of a major catastrophe

Help! I have a Toshiba Satellite 5005-S507 with SuSE9.2 and Mandrake 10.0 successfully installed.
While trying to install Fedora Core 3, the following happened:
When the screen comes up with the installation options (graphical mode or text mode), I typed next to boot: nofp
On the next line it says (without the quotes):
"Could not find kernel image: nofb".
So I was hoping this would work for me like it did for Theo, but it didn't!
If anyone can help, I'd be very appreciative. In advance thanks!

You have to select a kernel image first, then nofb as the arguemnt. Usually you just use linux, so at the boot: prompt type linux nofb

Thanks Brian....I sure wish it had worked. It typed next to boot: linux nofb
However, it still stuck below running /sbin/loader
Is there a more specific kernel option I should be running, instead of "linux"?
thanks,
Richard

I got a Toshiba Satallite to but got through all ur install problems without doing anything at all, it was all good.
However, now its installed when i run Fedora Core 3, it loads up all the way, the little green bar gets full then the screen just goes grey (not off) but grey and the mouse pointer is there for me to move about, but there is nothing to click on or do.
It has never booted properly!
Any Ideas?

Try http://vishalshah.org/node/view/81, there's an iso-file. If you can boot up this CD proper, then download the iso-images from fedora to a ftp server in your lan. Well, the howto's for Core1 and 2, but I will try it with 3.
That's what I'm doing now. When I got all the images, I will post, if that works.
I guess that's my last possibility to install fedora core3 on my notebook.
