Software to make the desktop black and white?

Is there a software package that allows color effects on the Desktop, maybe part of gnome or kde, so that I can desktop shows up fully made by black and white with tonalities of gray?

Why do you need software for that? Can you not use the gradients feature in the background settings? See attached screenshot (gnome) Or, are you looking to create patterns?

So tweak it until it looks like you want it to.

Re: Software to make the desktop black and white?

Now....you would have to take a radical departure from Gnome Shell and go back to Gnome2 (or possible Gnome Fallback) with compiz. I believe Compiz has an option for desaturating the entire desktop. You'll need to look into compiz in 'Add/Remove Software' and after that if it's not installed by default w/ compiz add another utility called CCSM. There should be a plugin within there somewhere that will give you exactly what you are asking.

I say this with caution... I've never tried the compiz-gnome session in F16 and/or tried to desaturate my screen, but I remember coming across that option years ago.

A little bit of research may be advised.

Re: Software to make the desktop black and white?

+1 to jazzer. There used to be a plugin in Compiz that just does that. http://wiki.compiz.org/Plugins/Colorfilter. Too bad Compiz is pretty much dead.

There is an alternative though that I have tested to be working in one of my F16 virtual machines. Attached is the screenshot.

As you can see, it is not just the theme, the whole "frame" is turned to grayscale by X server, including the movie clip.

Unfortunately, the steps that I will outline below may or may not work with your graphic card driver. For this to work, your graphic card driver (kernel module) must be able to support 8-bit color depth. If you are still interested, here are the steps which allows me to switch to grayscale on demand.

    1. Download the attached xorg configuration file and then put it into "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d" folder as root.

    2. Start the X server by providing the extra option to override the color depth to 8 bit.
    Code:
    $ startx -- -depth 8
Your mileage may vary, but I can achieve this by booting into multi-user mode (i.e. level 3) and then starting X server manually to add extra option. While you at it, you may want to try the "-retro" option as well to see how X starts in yesteryear. If I boot normally (level 5) then the display goes back to normal because the default depth is 24 for my case.

Personally I don't see much point of doing this but If you really like this that much then you can set the default depth as 8 bit in the configuration file as below.
    Code:
    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier "B&W TV Nosta-gila!"
    	Defaultdepth 8
    	SubSection "Display"
    		Depth 8
    		Visual "GrayScale"
    	EndSubSection
    EndSection
This will make X server always start in Grayscale by default.

Thanks to all for the help

weitjong I tried to do what you said, but when the Xserver should be initialized, it fails and says this:

Undefined Device "(null)" referenced by screen "B&W TV Nosta-gila!".

Re: Software to make the desktop black and white?

Not really sure. I am expecting Xorg to auto add the device when it needs one. Probably you can try to add the "device" entry manually inside the Screen section. Something like:

    Code:
    Section "Screen"
    	Identifier "B&W TV Nosta-gila!"
    	Device "Videocard0"
    ...
Check if in your system there is a file called "xorg.conf" and replace the value "Videocard0" to what have you for the device identifier in that file.

    Good luck.

Re: Software to make the desktop black and white?

As usual, weitjong has the most useful responses here.

I got weitjong's advice to work on my 2nd PC running F16, after creating this /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-local.conf file:
    Code:
    Section "Device"
            Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "sis" # Change this to match your video card
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
            Identifier "B&W TV Nostalgia!"
            Device "Videocard0"
            Defaultdepth 8
            SubSection "Display"
                    Depth 8
                    Visual "GrayScale"
            EndSubSection
    EndSection
That PC has an ancient SiS 305 card, so change the Driver line in the "Device" section to whatever driver your video card uses. Everything else could stay the same. Here's what it looked like in GNOME:

Re: Software to make the desktop black and white?

Didn't work again. The new error message.

Undefined Screen "Screen0" referenced by ServerLayout "single head configuratio
    n ".
I forgot to tell that I don't have a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d" folder, just a xorg.conf file where I am doing the changes.

My configuration of the "Screen" section is exactly as RupertPupkin's one

Which version of Fedora are you running? The past few Fedora releases have done away with monolithic xorg.conf. I think it explains why you have the problem. Can you post your current xorg.conf and your old one before you made any changes for grayscale visual for reference.
