    GUI missing - minimal install

I have just done a Minimum Install of F16 and selected:

    desktop environment
    XFCE
    Base system

    Admin tools
    Hardware support
    Virtualization
    Languages
    English UK

Problem is when I reboot I get a tty terminal rather than a desktop GUI.

There is obviously something else I should have done to do to get that selected GUI to run, can anyone tell me what I have missed?

    Thanks,

You need to change the default run level: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/System...lt_runlevel.3F

You need to put this in a terminal as root:
    Code:
     ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target
If that does not work get back to us.

The question is - is the gnome-session package and gdm installed or alternatives.
xfce has the xfce4-session session manager, but no 'dm' (login utility) like gdm/kdm/lxdm/slim

    HEY

You're a candidate to test my scripts
The script collection aims to help you build your custom OS (GUI) from a minimal install.

However, i provide mainly off-stream DE's unlike xfce which i call mainstaim, due to its gnome dependencies.
But it helps you set up a login manager and selectable boot targets.

If Aduniacs hint doesnt work, id try (almost the same):
    Code:
     ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/runlevel5.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target
    EFI Cheatsheet :: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=298546
Video Handler Script (VHS) (mass re-encode videos, screenrecorder, console music/webradio player, ...) :: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=299182
    Windows 8+ & Fedora 20+ Dualboot :: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=298161

OK tried that but now now freezes at 'Started Display Manager'. I can however still get to other terminals ctrl-alt-F2 etc.

My experiece is that runlevel5 works better, allthough they *should* do the same.
However, you might be missing either Graphic drivers, or a login manager.

Also tried that but now freezes at 'Starting Sendmail Mail Transport Client'.

Re: GUI missing - minimal install

Have you installed a login manager such as lxdm, slim, gdm or xdm?

So are you saying that the problem is because I sent for the xfce desktop, if I reinstalled and selected say lxdm would the GUI then automatically work?

If nothing else is missing.. yes.
Uh wait, that surely counts for kdm, gdm and xdm.
Not that sure about lxdm or slim.

    EDIT:
Worst case you need to create a file like (untested):

Err.. login manager? When I selected the xfce desktop I assumed that was everything needed, obviously not. Do I select a login manager from the install software options somewhere or do I just select a desktop other than xfce.

    Thanks,

Re: GUI missing - minimal install

You may install a login manager directly with yum:
    sudo yum install xdm
    or
    sudo yum install lxdm

Just a thought but do I need to select 'X Window System' during install?

Re: GUI missing - minimal install

Jup, didnt expect that to be missing

Ok after these posts, i'll change my script to that, that it lets you install kde, gnome and xfce too.
For those 3 'mainstreams' i'd use the groupinstall, rather than the minimal approach i use for the others.

And thank to you i had figured that my loginmgr script needs a little rework anway..

Re: GUI missing - minimal install

Yep just done the install again only this time selected 'X Window System' component as well, all boots fine to a GUI now.

Just one thing I notice though is that there is no CPU performance monitor that I can see, again is that something else I should have selected to install.
