Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

I was wondering if anybody had any issues when upgrading to Fedora 16, because after I upgraded from Fedora 15 to Fedora 16 my brightness keys aren't working 100% ok and also I've lost the capacity to enable any multitouch gestures in the gnome mouse settings (in Fedora 15 if I enabled tapping with my touchpad, two finger tap would be recognized as a right click which was awesome).

I don't really know what might be causing this but is it by any chance because of the transition from grub to grub2?

PS - I am able to decrease and increase screen brightness but when I decrease it by the first time after boot it goes straight to lower screen brightness level, also if I keep either increase or decrease key pressed to decrease or increase the screen brightness fast Fedora 16 isn't able to scale screen brightness levels and it freezes for some seconds and then goes either straight to lower screen level or maximum screen level depending if I kept decrease or increase screen brightness respectively.

I hope anyone is able to help me because excluding these issues Fedora 16 feels snappier and more stable than Fedora 15 at least in my computer

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

I tried to add acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux for the brightness keys into /etc/default/grub, but it does not seem to work I have not played with Grub2 yet, so still looking how to solved that. However multitouch works out of the box on my Aspire 5742.
If anyone has any clue where to add the above mentioned options that would be great ))

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

I posted my issue in RedHat bugzilla, my bug report was moved to gnome-settings-daemon. If the issue isn't related to grub2 at least directly, it makes sense that changing the kernel parameters won't help much I think. I just hope this gets fixed because everything was working ok, the only reason I don't want to change back is because Fedora 16 feels a bit faster.

http://geslinux.blogspot.com/2011/07...2-display.html worked for me on F15, so not sure how much it is related to Gnome settings.

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

    Hi

I face this problem too - It doesnt happen all the time though... Yesterday it was fine today the screen is at lowest brightness. It looks like the system is not recognizing higher brightness levels.... The keyboard controls work - I even get the screen prompt showing the brightness level but it doesnīt increase...

    Thanks
    Anup

    Hi

I tried the change in grub suggested by Gescape - didnīt have an impact.

Now the brightness has dropped to minimum... Iīm not sure if a recent update release after the Distribution release caused this because I am seeing the problem only after doing that....

    Thanks

I opened a bugzilla for it, but it does not seem to be much interest of it at the moment

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

It seems this bug is related to gnome-settings daemon, even the no multitouch issue. I added the testing repos and updated, my brightness keys now don't work at all, anyway this is somehow a relief for me since it means that the issue is being worked on, at least I think so.

Interesting there is no gnome-power-backlight-helper in /usr/sbin

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

I am new to Fedora, so I have to get used to it.

Backlight worked just fine on fresh intall, and after upgrade it won't work.

I looked the packages carefully, and the only thing i remember to be related to X session was dbus.....

Can it be a dbus problem too?

Yes, I remember that after updating dbus, the fn+ keys for adjusting LCD brightness doesn't
    work anymore.
I posted a new thread about this problem before I saw detail about this thread.

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

    Hi Vladmir

The steps suggested in the thread - the acpi stuff works fine - Edit the grub.conf with the info - Mine looks like this -

    ----snip-----
    title Fedora (3.1.0-7.fc16.x86_64)
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /vmlinuz-3.1.0-7.fc16.x86_64 ro root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root rd_LVM_LV=VolGroup/lv_root rd_LVM_LV=VolGroup/lv_swap rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_MD rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYTABLE=us-acentos rhgb quiet acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux
    initrd /initramfs-3.1.0-7.fc16.x86_64.img
    -------snip-----

Looks like my earlier attempt to edit was wrong. Otherwise you can try installing the nvidia kernel mod....

    Thanks
    Anup

I am not running F16 yet because I currently only have a cellular connection for download.

    Could this be your problem?

For now I'll revert to Fedora 15, I'll give Fedora 16 a try here in a month.

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

Josian - If you need to go back - you should go back to F14 or F13 - I just fished out my usb install of F13 and its so much more stable

Right now I am only hooked onto 1 feature - The hot corner.... Iīll probably jump to any OS that gives me that facility

---------- Post added at 09:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:03 AM ----------

Josian - If you must go back then F13 or F14 are better bets I feel. I found F13 the most stable for my laptop.... F14 had issues with the Nvidia Chipset and the screen was always dark! , F15 had wifi issues - I never got it to work - had to switch ti wicd, External monitor issues....

F16 - LCD brightness still is buggy, wifi is fine, but there are lot of mini bugs with the extensions! And the interface has been changed so wierdly - I mean I have a wifi connection, and a right click - disconnects it ! Yesterday I got kicked out of my VPN when I right clcked to check my IP config.... You cant launch applications by clicking them - You need to do CTRL+Click, Canīt shutdown without an īALTī key press..... Pardon my saying so but F16 has become a really eerie ghost of Windows....

We could live with the shell prompt - but in days of 8 core GPUīs - well I donīt think so!

Sorry to Rant just such a pain.... and still too hooked to the hot corner to revert to Windows 7

Mhhh switching back to older releases? I am starting to miss Arch and Gentoo a lot :P.

Anyway, as i lack time, i'll have to wait a bit. Maybe a future update fix that.

I am still sure is something with dbus, so i'll study that

Re: Brightness keys and multitouch not working properly in Fedora 16

This isn't an issue whether switching to Arch or another linux distro would help. I think this is a upstream issue so, for me Gnome 3.2 is a not good for the time being. (I get this exactly this same issues with Ubuntu 11.10 which uses Gnome 3.2 as a base).

---------- Post added at 12:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:53 PM ----------

@ akvasu Gnome 3.0 is for the time being the only Gnome version that allows me to have both multitouch and brightness keys fully functional without any tweak, also Fedora 15 works pretty stable in my pc, Fedora 16 runs great appart from the issues in question which I think are being worked on.
