FC3 needs CD to install additional packages

    Hi,

i am new to red hat (but experienced with debian and linux in general) an just installed FC3.
Most things work okay now, but i have a problem with installing additional packages:

when i download a rpmfile and install it by "executing" it in the file browser it sometimes
asks me to insert one of the fedora install cds. when i use the graphical too to install
new applications it asks me to insert the cds, too.

i want the system to download everything and not to use the cds anymore.

i checked /etc/yum.com and the repo dirs, but they seems to be free of any entries pointing
to local devices - only redhat online mirrors in these files.

any ideas how i can tell FC3 not to use the install CDs anymore?

    thank you,
    yours philipp

You can try installing synaptic, this program graps all the stuff from the internet.

Here's a link for setting up the repositories in synaptic!!!

    hi artemis,

thank you. but synaptic is only a different tool to install packages. alternativ to yum, but that will not
get me rid of FC3 trying to get files from my local CD rom, will it ?!

    Let's say it this way:
I always install Fedora as netinstall. So I don't own the Fedora-CDs. Now I can say you for sure:
Not yum nor apt (with the GUI Synaptic) demands your CD.

Well I had a problem with Fedora Core 2 once. Fedora prompt me for putting in a cd, so I did, but somehow Fedora could not locate the disk. I installed synaptic and fixed the broken packages. Synaptic becomes my standard way of installing packages and I never was prompted again. Like I said before, it seems that the program graps it all from the internet.

FC3 asks for my installations CDs

i installed FC3 from the installation CDs ive downloaded. now when i go to (in gnome) <Red-Hat-Button><System Preferences><Add/Remove Applications> it opens a menu from
which i can add programs or remove them. so far so good. but when i add a program, it
asks me to insert FC3 CD # (1-3). i dont want to install such software from the CDs as i have to
get the CD and insert them and that eats time and nervs, but i want FC3 to download the files
    needed !

now please dont suggest to use yum or something - i do. but i want the <add/remove applications> program to work as well, but i cant figure how to tell it to not use the CDs.

what kind of installation system is used ? in dont think its yum, because i only have Internet-Sites in my yum- repos.

any ideas what kind of system FC3 uses here ?

    regards,
    Philipp

PS: as my system language is german, ive translated the names of the menus.

    Additional Information

    i just tested another scenario:

when i search for a rpm-file on the net, say realplay, and i click the rpm file in firefox,
firefox suggests to open the file with system-install-packages. i did open it with
systen-install-packages and it said that some xorg-libs were need to meet dependencies.

now it asked me to insert FC Disk 02 !!! i want the system to get those files online !

    Regards,
    Philipp

Unfortunately, system-config-packages does not resolve dependencies online. Your options online are yum and synaptic (the GUI for apt).
