gksu in fedora? beesu does not like f15

    Hi All,

Thanks for reading. Added an icon for Xampp via Alacarte(Main Menu) and need something like gksu to make it work. In the past i installed Beesu but in F15 it causes problems during boot and shutdown.

Is there any convenient way to install gksu or any other solution to get the graphical starter working?

Weird - I'm using beesu and it hasn't caused issues for me on F15.

I have long ago tried to compile gksu, but there were conflicts that I could not resolve. You should try the KDE kdesu which may work for you.

thanks flyingfsck for your quick reply!

i have two notebooks and both show very strange and slooow behaviour during boot with beesu installed. With beesu removed everything is fine again. Beesu does work though.

Are you using desktop, kde or any other edition? I will search for kdesu later, good idea. Hope it is in the fedora repos and does not install tons of kde packages as dependencies.

Would like to see gksu in the repos for F16. Maybe there is a reason for fedora to abandon it, but i can't see what the conflict would be

might be just me, but like gksu i can't find kdesu in the repos

did you mean installing from source?

What exactly is beesu useful for. I really don't see the advantage over sudo.
It claims to be graphical - bu it uses to graphics or libs.

Also a few months ago i was able to convince myself that beesu shell"-s" option was a vast security hole. Other exploits seem possible.
Here is an example exploit ...

    [stevea@crucibulum ~]$ ls -l /tmp/test/test.txt
    -rw-r----- 1 root root 5 Jul 24 05:15 /tmp/test/test.txt
    [stevea@crucibulum ~]$ cat /tmp/test/test.txt
    cat: /tmp/test/test.txt: Permission denied
    [stevea@crucibulum ~]$ sudo cat /tmp/test/test.txt
    TEST
    [stevea@crucibulum ~]$ ln -s /tmp/test/test.txt ./ls
    [stevea@crucibulum ~]$ beesu -s /usr/bin/less ls | cat
    TEST
This effectively executes "/usr/bin/less -c ls", with privilege but any command including a custom compile can be substituted for less !

    beesu.conf contains....
    <allow>
    ls
    </allow>
I wouldn't use it if you care about security.

Hmm, it looks like kdesu is in kdebase, so you got to install the whole hog to get it.

Re: gksu in fedora? beesu does not like f15

that would be a little much help for such a small problem

but why is kdesu included and gksu left out in fedora?

Laak ah sed. Gksu doesn't compile - or at least didn't a year or two ago. Get the source and try it.

appreciate your input, is this -s option problem you described in ubuntu/debian gksu as well?

So I assume you need privilege to run this program. and in the command part of the alacarte description you want to put something like
    beesu Xampp
    Is that about right ?

So why doesn't sudo work ?

You need to specify something approximately (untested) like ...
    Defaults secure_path = /sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
    Defaults !requiretty
    arowana ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/binXampp

    in a /etc/sudoers/xampp-test file

    then:
    sudo /usr/bin/Xampp

    for the command
I don't understand why these other sudo wrappers are necessary (and they are dangerous) - so maybe I am missing something.

Extremely unlikely. This is a beesu specific problem. I don't know about gksu.

I haven't used kdesu (in KDE) for awhile, but there is this a fix that needs to be applied for it to work as expected (at least in Mandriva and Mageia).

    .
It allows connections to xserver. Can't see how to do this otherwise in a quick and easy way that's needed for running things quickly. Is the big still there?

"I don't understand why these other sudo wrappers are necessary"

They work in Bash scripts. Sudo doesn't.
