    Post Tomcat 6 Fedora 15

    Hi All,

I have installed a fedora 15 (on a Oracle Virtual Box) and after tried to install tomcat6.

The tomcat instalation was ok, but when I try to start the tomcat service it fails.

    $service tomcat6 start
    $service tomcat6 restart

I used: yum install tomcat6 with root and it downloaded its dependencies.

    Inside catalina.out Iīve found:
    /usr/sbin/tomcat6: line (30 or 60): /usr/share/tomcat6/logs/catalina.out: permission denied.

Iīve googled it, but I coundnīt find any clue.

It seens to have relation with java, but java is ok:
java -version results: java version "1.6.0_22".

Id did the same on a Fedora 14 x86_64 and it has worked fine.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: Tomcat 6 Fedora 15

It looks like the permissions on the Tomcat directories are not quite correct, these commands should fix it until the package is fixed:
    sudo chmod 775 /var/log/tomcat6
    sudo chmod 775 /etc/tomcat6

The problem has already been raised here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=677414

Thumbs up Re: Tomcat 6 Fedora 15

    vwhitteron,

    With these comands tomcat6 starts.
But I am facing another problem.
When I try http://localhost:8080 or the admin URL I get a blank page with no errors inside the logs.

    I could telnet the port.

    Thanks for your help.

    vwhitteron,

I tried to install the testing version of tomcat tomcat6-6.0.32-2.fc15 after read the bug that you told me.

It resolved the old problem, but to use the admin application I had to run:
    chown -R tomcat:tomcat /etc/tomcat6/Catalina

The folder (and subfolder) had root:tomcat permission and returns permission denied.

Itīs working fine for the moment.
    Letīs start some deploy tests.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: Tomcat 6 Fedora 15

    Here is solution.
    yum install tomcat6 tomcat6-admin-webapps tomcat6-webapps
    chmod g+x /usr/share/tomcat6/logs
    chmod g+x /etc/tomcat6
    chmod g+x /usr/share/tomcat6/webapps/
    chmod g+x /usr/share/tomcat6/temp
    chmod g+x /usr/share/tomcat6/work
    chmod g+x /var/cache/tomcat6
    chown -R tomcat:tomcat /etc/tomcat6/Catalina
    chmod g+x /var/lib/tomcat6/

Ok. Now try start tomcat again:
    service tomcat6 restart
    Open browser: http://localhost:8080/
    It's work!
