    system-config-network: why text mode

    Hi All,

    I support both Fedora (workstations) and Scientific Linux (servers).

    Under SL 5.5, I have a really slick graphical utility called:

    $ ls -al system-config-network
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Oct 23 2009 system-config-network -> consolehelper

    The same utility under FC15, 64 bit, Xfce spin, is a really crude text mode utility. I would like the nice graphics utility under FC15. Am I stuck with the crude one under FC15? Am I missing something? Is something missing that is forcing this utility into text mode?

    Many thanks,
    -T

    I noticed that too, I was figuring that would just be true in the beta but then the final F15 came out and system-config-network was still launching the crude console tool

    To open the connection editor in F15 type the following at the prompt:
    nm-connection-editor

    Re: system-config-network: why text mode

    There are two system-config-network applications in Fedora

    system-config-network (the gui one)
    system-config-network-tui (the text one)

    You probably have the latter and not the former installed.

    I agree, try installing system-config-network first, then issue the command system-config-network.

    Here is my (new) notes on the subject:

    ~~~~~~ system-config-network.EnableGraphicsMode.txt ~~~~~~~
    How to enable system-config-network's graphics mode:
    FC14+ ships with with system-config-network-tui which
    is only text mode. It shows in /usr/bin as system-network-config,
    which is misleading.
    $ rpm -qa \*system-config-network\*
    system-config-network-tui-1.6.2-2.fc15.noarch
    The graphics portion is in the non-tui package:
    # yum install system-config-network
    ...
    Installing : system-config-network-1.6.2-2.fc15.noarch 1/1
    Note: do not uninstall system-config-network-tui. Yum will
    just reinstall it as a dependency
    Re: system-config-network: why text mode
    Looks like something changed from F14 to F15, in Fedora 14 installing the Server Configuration Tools group would include system-config-network, but in Fedora 15 this doesn't happen.
    UPDATE - weird, I just checked yum groupinfo "Server Configuration Tools" on my last F14 installation and system-config-network isn't in that group either. Whatever, I just know that I never had to explicitly install s-c-n until now with F15
    Hi Marko,
    Those system-config-xxx tools are sweet tools. Must be an oversight that the developers left them off. I asked them to add them back.
    The big point is the gui tool has more functionality in one place, the tui tool doesn't do as much.
    BTW regarding your bug entry, there's no package called system-config-networking, it's spelled system-config-network
    I find the tui tools awful. I am much more fond of the gui tools. Don't give me too much poop over "ssh -X" either. But, to be honest, most of the time I use the dreaded "vi".
    Ooops. Made a note on the bug report. I went to publik skool after all. Thank you.
    Thank you for all the help with this post too. The graphic was perfect.
