GNOME3 and ATi drivers?

Hello all,

Currently I am running an Arch Linux install with GNOME3 on top. I'm liking it so far, but I have a problem with my graphics card, which is an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5470.

As always, I have to option between two drivers:
1. The open source one;
2. Catalyst.

Now on Arch, both have an issue with GNOME3. The open source driver has terrible power management, so my card is always running at full speed and thus gets kinda hot - and the Catalyst driver doesn't work well with GNOME3 (slow effects and the top bar looks like a rainbow)

Now what I'd like to know, is if you guys have the same issues on Fedora 15? In other words; can you use the Catalyst driver without drawbacks in Fedora 15 w/GNOME3 or do you have a fixed open source driver for ATi? (so proper power management)

did you try the KMS Power Management Options described here?

I didn't try catalyst driver on Fedora 15 yet, because it probably does still not work with xorg-server version 1.10. Radeon driver works fine for me, but I don't know if power management works well or rather bad. I'm using Fedora 15 on a desktop computer with Radeon HD 3200, so power management is not crucial for me.

You can't even use catalyst with fedora 15 yet. I am having 0 Issues with gnome 3 with the oss drivers for my hd2600. I do have the heat issues you have, but that is an issue with the oss drivers in general, not gnome3.

Alright guys, thanks for your help. For now I'll stay with Arch and try your suggestion, Fenrin.
When Fedora 15 goes stable, I'll have another go and try to get Catalyst working.

EDIT: Sadly the powersaving methods didn't really work. When I change the profile, I get too slow effects and when I used dynpm my screen went flickering.
