    can't find system-config-display packages

Please help. I can't change my screen resolution but my fedora doesn't have system-config-display. Trying to install this package and for some reason it is not listed under the add/remove software, and yum says it can't find it either.

    # yum install -y system-config-display

    results
    No package system-config-display available.
    Error: Nothing to do

Searching in the add/remove software I found some others such as system-config-firewall, system-config-date and etc but it doesn't have system-config-display.

Is there any other way to install this package?

    currently running
kernal linux 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.x86_64 , fedora 14 on 64 bit system
    gnome 2.32.0

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

    Code:
    # yum list system*
    Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
    Adding en_US to language list
Error: No matching Packages to list
It doesn't find anything ? The command works with other packages tho.

    Code:
    # yum list nano
    Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
    Adding en_US to language list
    Available Packages
    nano.x86_64 2.2.4-1.fc14

    Just found this

    http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_create_xorg.conf

It says that system-config-display is not available for F14.

I was going to post similar information. Too bad, I thought system-config-display was a great tool.

At any rate, what hardware are you using (video card) and what problem are you having ?

You can use several tools to set a resolution, including xrandr.
If it is not broken, tweak it... If you break Fedora you get to keep both pieces :p

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

There is a package system-config-display for F14 available in the tigro-repo..
But you should also take a look into your xorg.conf (if present). If there are no higher resolutions configured, system-config-display also won't show them, I guess.

Unhappy Re: can't find system-config-display packages

One of the great things about system-config-display was that you could do the following to make things right:

    system-config-display --reconfig --set-resolution=1920x1080 --set-depth=24

Things would stay at that resolution until you did another reconfig.

What replaces the system-config-display that is so good we didn't need to old command? Why was it removed and no explanation was given?

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

It was supposedly interfering with another package - the one that took it's place, IIRC & I THINK that was "MONITORS".

It ended up "getting swept under the rug" then eventually, "out the back door". Sad, as I liked it better, too. (this auto stuff just doesn't cut it at times, they make to many assumptions!)

Thanks! I spoke with a guy at work and he mentioned xrandr, but I haven't tried it yet. I check monitors and see if it does what I need it to do.

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

Ok. So it is a month later and nobody has come up with an answer. How do you configure the display in Fedora 15 with similar function to system-config-display? Is the only way now to edit xorg.conf by hand? I am having this problem also.

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

    there is system-switch-displaymanager in F15.

system-config-display is no longer in the repos since F15.

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

System-switch-displaymanager changes the window manager. It doesn't have anything to do with setting the resolution and sync rates for your display, which is what system-config-display did for you in the console. I, and others on this thread are seeking a functional console replacement for system-config-display.

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

I don't know where I got the idea that you were trying to switch display managers.

But here it is straight from Redhat:

    system-config-display
The system-config-display tool has been replaced by XRandr configuration tools as found in both supported desktops: GNOME and KDE. There is no explicit configuration file (xorg.conf) in the default X server installation as display management is now done dynamically via one of the following menu options:
GNOME: System → Preferences → Display
KDE: System Settings → Computer Administration → Display
Note: The command line utility (xrandr) can be also used for display configuration. See the xrandr --help command or the manual page via the man xrandr command for further details.

    Re: can't find system-config-display packages

Thanks. It appears they have not replaced the functionality of system-config-display. xranr does the same things as Xorg -configure. System-config-display was an ncurses interface that allowed you to select resolutions, test them and write the x config file.
