Screen issues on Intel 945GM graphics chipset
I just installed Fedora 14 KDE 32-bit on my sister's laptop, but it is having troubles with the screen. On the login screen, and after login, the desktop doesn't fill to the screen size, leaving large black bars around the edges of the screen. I generated an xorg.conf with:
and I added
in the "Screen" subsections as a rough guess for the correct resolution, but nothing happens. I also ran a system update, to no avail.
I tried installing Gnome, on the outside chance that it was a KDE bug, but Gnome is behaving the same. The graphical screen re-size utilities in Gnome and KDE are detecting the screen as being 1024x768.
The system is currently running Mesa DRI drivers, and I'm wondering if I need to install a proprietary Intel driver to correct the resolution issues, but wasn't sure about which package to install, as I'm not familiar with Intel graphics on Linux.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
LinuxDanP

For Intel cards proprietary drivers do not exist. Intel puts all effort into open drivers and these are developed by Intel.
Did you try to change the screen resolution from KDE's System Settings (Display and Monitor)?

I agree the effort should be placed into getting the open source Intel Graphic drivers priority to solving this problem.
But I do not believe it accurate to state that Intel proprietary drivers do not exist. For example:
- iegd - this is a proprietary Intel Linux driver for selected Intel graphic hardware. The iegd driver supports the Mobile Intel(R) GM45/GL40/GS45, GLE960, GME965, 945GME, 945GSE, 915GME, 910GMLE chpsets and also the Intel(R) Atom(TM), Q45/G45/G41, Q35, Q964, Q945G, 915GV chipsets.
- emgd - this is a proprietary Intel Linux driver for a very small selection of specific Intel graphic hardware. The emgd driver supports only the Intel® System Controller Hub US15W, US15WP and US15WPT, and the Intel® Atom™ Processor E6xx Series. One needs to download and install separately this proprietary Intel graphic driver.
As whether any of those drivers (such as iegd) will work for the user, I do not know. There is no mention of 945GM support in the iegd page that I can see, only 945GME (which I believe is an embedded version, but in truth, I do not know the difference between the 945GM nor the 945GME, nor do I have any assessment as to how bad (or good) the proprietary intel iegd driver may be).

Re: Screen issues on Intel 945GM graphics chipset
Well, I found my problem... when I had booted the live cd, I selected the "Basic Video" boot option. I just re-installed with the standard boot option, and the screen is now just fine.
Good to know about the Intel Linux drivers... I'm an nVidia user, so I don't have any previous experience with Intel graphics chipsets.
Just out of curiosity, what are the configuration differences between the basic video and standard boot options?
Thanks!

Re: Screen issues on Intel 945GM graphics chipset
Hello everyone, I have Fedora 20, I can't find iegd driver in repository now. What driver can I set for my G45 express chipset?
I set xorg-x11-drv-intel, but it gives me only size 1024 x 768. How can I get 1280x1024.
I tryed xrandr -s 1280x1024 - but I got message - this size not found in available modes
