Thread title changed, please don't mark your posts as urgent!

In fact try giving it a proper title that reflects the actual issue.

    Have you backed up lately?

Use the live cd to access your work if it is an emergency. The live cd can access your files and open documents. If you need something done that the live cd can not do, you can temporarily install the required software.

Could you include the name of the missing shared object? , it will be included in the error message.

Re: please help - reboot fails

    try using the rescue CD.

If the network still won't come up, you can reinstall the library from the
CD itself, it would be a downgrade. It should get you started.

Re: please help - reboot fails

    For pure speculation...

A memory resident code page that mapps to the "bad" library... becomes
corrupted by a transient memory error. Once the page in memory is
corrupted, it is bad forever, or until it is loaded from disk (being overwritten).

Since glibc is used by nearly everything, it will remain
resident nearly forever... The only way to guarantee a reload is to
reboot. What causes such transient errors... several possiblities:
    1) cosmic ray - yes they happen (I used to admin some Cray XMP/YMP
where the memory was super reliable... except for an occasional failure
where the memory would still pass the hardest diagnostics afterwards.)
    2) power fluctuation - in the presence of lightning/minor EMP
    3) memory is weak to start with, and fails occasionally. Usually not
observed if reboots are done frequently. I had this occur with some
old 60ns memory.. Worked fine for an hour or so, but then I started
getting segfaults. When I slowed the memory down to 70 ns, problem
    disappeared.

This assumes the memory+motherboard does not support parity checking or ECC logic.

Parity memory can detect single bit errors, but miss double bit errors,
    and cannot correct anything.

ECC can correct single bit errors, and detect double bit errors; but a
triple bit error won't be caught.
