Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

Hi I recently installed fedora 14, keep in mind that I am new to linux, I migrated from windows to ubuntu and now trying out fedora.

After I did my installl, it said to upgrade the system packages etc.. And I guess it also updated the kernel to 2.6.35.10-72.fc14.x86_64. However my computer always gets stuck during booting and the fedora icon is just stuck there in the middle of the screen.
The booting process gets stuck at
Startuing udev: udevd-work[481]: '/sbin/modprobe -bv acpi: ENE0100: 'unexpected exit with status 0x0009
I have to reboot and load the old kernel.

How can I fix this? And If I can't fix the new kernel problem, how do I get rid of it and just stick with my old one that works.

    Thank you

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

I have the identical problem on my HP i7 Laptop I installed the
    2.6.35.10-72.fc14. PAE kernel.

I have to revert to the previous kernel in order to boot.

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

From a bugzilla report, it looks like the problem is in the v4l/dvb media_tree

    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=664145

One person stated that they turned off IR in the bios and blacklisted ene_ir and got around the bug.

or you can grab the 2.6.35.10-74.fc14 kernel from koji that fixes this problem, but you will have to compile it yourself. no rpm's for it yet.

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

esbenn, If you can boot into your last working kernel,
Start PC, Press right arrow key until you see the Grub boot menu, Press the down arrow to select the second entry in the list, press enter
This will get you by until another kernel comes out through the update system.

Its tricky and slightly risky, but you can update to the koji kernel posted at http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/b...buildID=211598 by downloading the necessary files and then from the command prompt type something like:
    Code:
    cd Download
    su -c 'rpm -Uvh kernel-*74*'
You can figure out which bits to download by asking yum:
    Code:
    yum list kernel*
This will tell you which you need. You probably need one of the following groups:

    kernel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686.rpm
    kernel-headers-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686.rpm
    kernel-devel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686.rpm
    -or-
    kernel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64.rpm
    kernel-devel-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64.rpm
    kernel-headers-2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64.rpm
But please check yum for sure. YMMV

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

    just to let everyone know.

kernel 2.6.35.10-74 is now in the fedora updates-testing repo if you wish to install it from there to see if it fixes your boot problem.

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

I was having the same problem on my laptop HP DV7(x86_64)

Tried the new 10-74 kernel and seems to work fine.

Should I be reporting this success anywhere else?

I have disabled test updates repo. Am I correct in thinking that the standard updates repo will still provide the next kernel update without me needing to do anything other than run a standard update?

    Thanks for the help.

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

you are correct. even if you installed the 10-74 kernel from the updates-testing repo, you will still get the updated kernel when a newer one gets pushed into the updates repo, since you turned off updates-testing. You don't need to do anything special to have your system update as it normally has in the past.

Re: Fedora 14 Installed but unable to boot

    yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update kernel

will get the working Package kernel.x86_64 0:2.6.35.10-74.fc14 to anyone who wants the kernel fix now....
