Unable to find wireless driver for hp probook 6450b

Hello. I am trying to get the wireless working on a fresh install of F13 on my HP probook 6450b. The wireless button above my keyboard is amber, when I press it i see the following in /var/log/messages :

ep 29 11:32:43 localhost kernel: atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xf8 on isa0060/serio0).
Sep 29 11:32:43 localhost kernel: atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e078 <keycode>' to make it known.
Sep 29 11:32:43 localhost kernel: HP WMI: Unknown response received
Sep 29 11:32:43 localhost kernel: atkbd serio0: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0xf8 on isa0060/serio0).
Sep 29 11:32:43 localhost kernel: atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e078 <keycode>' to make it known.

Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

Those messages in /var/log/message just say that it's a softkey and it isn't programmed to do anything in Linux. It's not directly relevant to the wifi.

We first need to identify your wifi hardware and see if a driver is installed.

You should open a terminal window, 'su' to root, and then execute a few exploratory commands.

    su -
    <passwd>
    lspci -nnk

    # and maybe
    lsusb

The lspci -nnk list ALL the pci devices in your system, their numeric part IDs and the associated driver (if any). Among the ~80 lines of output mine has a few lines for my wifi like ....
04:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:001c] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Askey Computer Corp. Device [144f:7106]
    Kernel driver in use: ath5k
    Kernel modules: ath5k
You may have difficultly distinguishing the wired vs wireless device - so just post whichever you think relevant.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I see two related things:

    44:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n [14e4:4353] (rev 01)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1509]
    and

00:19.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82577LC Gigabit Network Connection [8086:10eb] (rev 05)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1471]
    Kernel driver in use: e1000e
    Kernel modules: e1000e

That makes sense - you have the broadcom wifi, many 6450b appear to have an intel centrino .
Your device wasn't "claimed" by any drive at bootup.

I'm not the broadcom wifi expert, but it appears that this driver is not included in Fedora undoubtedly b/c it's non-free code. ((Fedora is all free code)). Some other distros like Ubuntu aren't so picky.

The driver is available in the rpmfusion repository, here:
    http://rpmfusion.org/
Click thru the "enable rpm fusion ..." and use either the firefox or the command line setup. This step enables your system to access the RPM-fusion repository.

Onec that is setup then install the package: "broadcom-wl" using the command line:
    su -
    <passwd>
    yum -y install broadcom-wl

After that then reboot. Then "lspci -nnk" should show a "kernel module" for the wifi, and NetworkManager" should recognize and use your wifi.
*** IMPORTANT *** The yum command above will also pull in the "kmod-wl" package which is a driver, while broadcom-wl are just some config files. Whenever you updsate the kernel you will need to update the driver package as well.

    Here is the package descriptor,

    Name : broadcom-wl
    Arch : noarch
    Version : 5.60.48.36
    Release : 1.fc13
    Size : 12 k
    Repo : rpmfusion-nonfree
Summary : Common files for Broadcom 802.11 STA driver
    URL : http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
License : Redistributable, no modification permitted
Description : This package contains the license, readme and configuration files
: for the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA Driver for WiFi, a linux device
    : driver for use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and
    : BCM4322-based hardware.

this is no longer working. I noticed you mentioned updating my kernel would mean updating the drivers. I did a yum update on both broadcom-wl and kmod-wl and both are up to date, but I don't have any wireless networking.

    Keegan,

What you should do is follow AdamW advise. Suppose you've successfully installed the rpmfusion free and non-free repository packages, so what you should do is:

    Code:
    su
    yum install broadcom-wl akmod-wl
    and then - reboot.

After that - you should be OK even when upgrading the kernel as akmod builds the new kernel module, for the respective new kernel, during the boot process.

I also use HP notebook with very similar Broadcom wireless device and that solution is almost perfectly working for me maybe since F9.

    Regards,

    P.L.

    EDIT

I saw it's already OK, no need of my post.

cool as phantom_lord says, what the akmod package actually does is check if the module is present when you boot, and if not, it tries to build it from 'source'. so it's kind of a backstop for the case when a pre-built kmod-wl package isn't yet available for the kernel you're running.
