I think a piece of hardware is starting to fail on me

I have noticed this problem when I first started over clocking my machine, the screen went black and my led was a solid red just going crazy. I then used a tool to set my cpu to about 2.07ghz and it seemed to behave properly. But now every once in a while my screen will go black and the led will go crazy...It does it regardless of OS so I know its a hardware issue in fact it just did it about 15 minutes ago while I was in Fedora....what could be the problem here?

I really don't want to put my cpu back to normal as it is a 1.8 or 1.7 ghz processor which is just too damn slow for me...[Especially on windows.]

What kind of processor do you have and how did you overclock it? I've heard that the newer Pentiums do not overclock very well and get unstable. The few success stories I've heard just overclocked the FSB. But, I must admit that I'm a bit out of my element here--I haven't overclocked a chip since the old P1 333 days.

I have over clocked my p4 for a from 2.4 to 2.9 for a while, but it wasn't stable enough. I trick is to use excessive cooling. If you don't you could fry your cpu along with your ram Fans may not be enough for the speed boost your looking for. In any case, you will considerably shorten the lifespan of your cpu.

i dont think is related to your cpu...being overclocked!...but make sure your bios supports the jump to took and also have you try a different monitor to narrow down the search to the video card?

I have a 1.7 GHz Celeron and performance is decent.

The monitor blanking sounds like a video card problem, but the hard drive light seems like something else.

Have you run any tests? There should be a memory test on Fedora CD 1. Boot it and enter memtest at the prompt.
