Nvidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio - Macbook Pro 5,3 - Fedora 13

I have no sound at all, I've tried many a workaround, perhaps someone can suggest a way of getting it to work?

It should work. My desktop has that chip and it works perfectly.

My MCP61 is horrible under Fedora 13. So bad I don't bother with it and play music on one of my old boxes. Wonder how different it is from the MCP79?

Well MCP just stands for Multi Chip Package so it's just a bunch of different chips on one die. Since they put versions of realtek on there it depends on which realtek chip it is since there are literally dozens. MCP79 uses ALC 662.in most. Though there's 2 versions of that chip.

But theres so many multi's in this chip package. Mine uses ALC888.
There's a bug ticked on opensolaris that says the latest version tries to use the ALC 885 codec and I don't think theres a version MCP79 that uses that chip. So someone got the pci id table scrambled maybe.
LSPCI that sucker and see what it says. I just checked the MCP61 and it has multiple versions as well. 3 different video portions, 2 different south bridges and probably multiple sound chip versions.

I have an MCP61 and it works fine under Fedora 13 it's a:

    Code:
Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
But it's an ALC888S according to motherboard specs.

    dmesg | grep hda_codec says:

    Code:
    hda_codec: ALC662 rev1: BIOS auto-probing.
    ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:4284: autoconfig: line_outs=1 (0x14/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
    ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:4288: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
    ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:4292: hp_outs=1 (0x1b/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
    ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:4293: mono: mono_out=0x0
    ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:4304: inputs: mic=0x18, fmic=0x19, line=0x1a, fline=0x0, cd=0x0, aux=0x0
