Click "Enable Desktop Effects" = log out

    Hi everyone,

I don't ever run my Fedora 11 system with desktop effects enabled, because I have an older laptop that can't be bothered to be slowed down [using extra resources] with them enabled.

I could, however, enable them to show people who haven't seen the cube/wobbly windows. That was before...

Now, when I go to System > Preferences > >Desktop Effects and click "Enable Desktop Effects", it just logs me out immediately, then I have to log back in, AND the Desktop Effects didn't even apply

Is there a particular log file I can check to see where errors may lie?

    Thanks for any help!!

I'd start by looking at /var/log/Xorg.log

How does it log you out? Gracefully, almost like after going through a regular log out, or rather abruptly, like as if X crashes?

    Open a terminal and enter:
    Code:
    desktop-effects
and see if it throws an error.

    Code:
    [fresh@630m ~]$ desktop-effects

    (desktop-effects:5195): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_atom_to_xatom_for_display: assertion `atom != GDK_NONE' failed

Pretty abruptly. The screen goes black, then after a bit it goes to the login screen...

I think it used to go black for a second before, but never would it log out.

    Here's:

    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

It's a bug in the latest X.Org update, see here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=518748

There's more discussion and some alternative workarounds here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=229898

As per that bug report, running this command fixed the issue for me.

    Code:
    sed -i -re 's/(export.*INDIRECT=1)/#\1/' /usr/bin/compiz-gtk

    Edit:

Oh, and I ran it as root.
