Delta RPMs (Presto) will be available for Fedora 11

    Hi

    http://jwboyer.livejournal.com/31831.html

"Oh, yeah. That's right. What you see there is indeed deltarpms for the first Fedora 11 updates push

I'd like to highlight that Seth Vidal, Luke Macken, and Bill Nottingham were the primary factors to getting this complete. They did the createrepo, bodhi, and mash changes needed. I'm always pleasantly surprised when people care enough to start digging in and fixing an issue they care about.

Fedora 11 is now made of that much more awesomeness."

I'll believe it when I see it.

    The story so far:

(way back in history) deltarpms for F9!
No, sorry, we thought we'd throw packagekit at you instead, maybe F10..
    Nope, but def for F11...
Oh Yeah! we are go for F11...
Ooops, last minute tech issues, rawhide only folks...
Oh yeah! We are back on, def for F11 folks...
    Watch this space...

that is awesome news. deltarpms were one of the main new features i was looking forward to in F11, i was really disappointed when i read that they would probably not make it in F11 .... but i am glad that it appears that they will make it after all....

I am downloading the fc11 preview iso with 2 hours to go. I tried jigdo in the past but kept having problems with it timing out. When the production fc11 comes out I am guessing that my test machine can be updated with yum or is there more to it?

    Hi,

Yes, you can just run yum update. Read

Great news, I was waiting for it to materialize for a year. It'd be a loss if it wouldn't make it.

BTW I've noticed something odd about updates. First run (both in beta and preview release) fetch only few (seven iirc) drpms, all the rest ar full-sized rpms. All the subsequent updates were using drpms.
Initially I thought it's b'cause there were no drpms matching the version of packages shipped in beta. But the same thing happend with preview install and I don't think prewiev has only seven packages newer than beta (it wouldn't make any sense to make it new testing release).

    Hi,

There has been a few infrastructure related glitches. Due to resource constraints, deltas are only generated relative to the update before. If it happens, again, the yum output would be useful.

deltarpms are constantly missing when I update F11 preview from rawhide, eg today it only picked up 2 deltas:

    Hi,

Delta generation is a very resource intensive task (memory, CPU and storage). It is always going to be a subset of what is theoretically possible. For example, we generate deltas from second to latest version to the latest version but it is possible to generate deltas for N - 2 or more. We have to draw the line somewhere. At some point, the infrastructure resources needed to generate delta's on the fly isn't going to be worth the cost. If the packages are small enough, deltas aren't worth providing yet. There might be code fixes post-release to lower the resources and then you will get a expanded subset.
