    Cool Mono?

    Hi,

Newbe as I am, and nosy as I am , I went "a-sniffin' " tru my system and stumbled upon something called mono - I looked it up (Yahoo!) and found that it is a dot-net thing. Do I need this? What would happen if I delete it from the system (tru software-de install of course)

    Tnx!

Some software uses it, even in Linux. You could try to deinstall it, if everything works as it should it will show you the software which depends on it and will be removed as well. Then you can judge, whether you need it.

Ok, I'll try that. Is'n Linux COOL???? Try that on the *other* stuff, ad it'll crash. ;-)

My Concern is that dot-net is "somewhat" virus-prone...on that other platform at any rate...

.net is a programming platform. If you start installing applications from unknown sources with administation rights, you do not need mono, to get into troubles. C, C++, Java, Perl, Python etc. already installed should be enough... SELinux helps a bit, but sill acting responsibly does help as well.

.NET is just a programming platform, somewhat similar to Java. It isn't inherently insecure just because it was made by Microsoft. In fact software written in a more abstract language like C# or Java is often more secure because there are protections against buffer exploits and such. Some people remove Mono on ethical grounds (I'm not one of them), but removing for fear of viruses is just silly.
