Sound stop working on fedora 9

    hi,

I have used following motherborad in my media center PC.

    GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H AM2
this mother board has following audio device
    Realtek ALC889A

Earlier my sound card used to work fine, but not any more now. It is a dual boot machine, windows can recognize the card use it.
I tried downloading driver code from realtek website still no use.
    realtek-linux-audiopack-5.07

here are few outputs, please let me know, what is wrong on my PC now.

Your output reveals a lot. Not all, but a lot.

My guess is sound was working before this. If this is true, then that means the realtek-linux-audiopack-5.07 changed a few things.

First verify, oss, alsa, esd, snd, are installed

could not open /lib/modules/2.6.27.7-53.fc9.x86_64/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko: No such file or directory....<snip>
Means the file is not where it's expected to be.

    Check your logs as well.

My soundcard stop working after yum update.

You are right few files are missing like snk.ko, but it was there for earlier kernel modules

    [root@x-mce modules]# find . -name snd.ko
    ./2.6.26.3-29.fc9.x86_64/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko
    ./2.6.26.5-45.fc9.x86_64/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko
    ./2.6.25.14-108.fc9.x86_64/kernel/sound/acore/snd.ko
    [root@x-mce modules]# uname -r
    2.6.27.7-53.fc9.x86_64

/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-53.fc9.x86_64 doesn't seems to have snk.ko or other modules.

snd.ko belong to alsa. Verify you have alsa.

I now booted the box with following kernel version
    2.6.26.5-45.fc9.x86_64

    no success

lspci gives only following details. My onboard sound chip is via realtek, why I see ATI audio device.
Kernel is not able to recognize the device ?

Reinstall alsa, and reconfigure your sound card.

Actually booting into 2.6.26.5-45.fc9.x86_64 fixed the issue.

As yo mentioned, I just have to run alsaconf again. This time alsaconf recognized following
    - hda-intel ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia
    - legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP) chips

    [root@sandip-mce ~]# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC885 Digital [ALC885 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    [root@sandip-mce ~]#

I tried to unstall alsa via Yum, Yum was trying to unstall 150 other package, which depends on this. I cancelled the operation.

How do I reinstall alsa ?

Now the issue is, when I reboot the system, I again come to same situation i.e. no audio device. I need to run alsaconfig again to get back my audio device.

Use yum to install smart-gui. With the smart gui, or from the command line, you can reinstall, alsa.

    Code:
    #smart --gui reinstall alsa*
That should return something like this
    Code:

I installed smart and reinstalled alsa*. Now I can't configure sound card.
aplay -l doesn't show any sound card.
Few things I observed compare to your alsa pckages
1). you are using 1.0.19 and I am using 1.0.17 for fc-9. Looks like 1.0.17 is latest in fc-9 repository. Do you suggest to upgrade to fc-10 ?
2). I see mine alsa-oss is developer version.
    alsa-oss-devel-1.0.15-0.1.fc9.x86_64
3). I see that you have alsa-plugins-usbstream package too. I can't this via smart and Yum. Not sure if this pkg can make the difference.

Forgot to mention that I did run alsaconf and it recognized following card.
    - hda-intel ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia

It said that it configured the card successfully however at the end it failed to play the sample .wav file.
