ati radeon driver slow (2D, desktop)

I have F10 + updates installed, and am using the ati/radeon driver with a FireGL V5200 chip in a laptop.

I've given up on compiz for now, so am using the regular X server with metacity/gnome.

When the session is started things are ok, but as I startup firefox, thunderbird, and other apps the GUI gets bogged down quite quickly -- so even without the CPU (core duo) spinning even at 50% the UI interaction is slow, ie flipping between windows etc.

I finally updated the driver to the latest on koiji ( xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.9.0-46.fc10.i386 ) to see if this helps, but it doesn't.

In xorg.conf I've gone from a very bare setting to also including

    Section "Device"

    #Driver "radeonhd"
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    Option "DynamicClocks" "1"
    Option "AccelDFS" "1"
    Option "DMAForXv" "1"
    Option "GARTSize" "128"
    #Option "EnableDepthMoves" "on"
    #Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    #Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    #Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
    Option "VideoKey" "0x01"
    #BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    #Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
    #Option "FBTexPercent" "30"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    #Driver "fglrx"
    #BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection

ie I've tried with all three drivers, even with basically everything except Identifier/Driver commented out.

As an aside, radeonhd seems somewhat slower (unless there are specific options to recommend), whilst fglrx is problematic getting working (see seperate thread)

Recommendations on xorg.conf options for this driver, or for radeonhd/fglrx very welcome.

Does anyone else see this slowdown?

I should add that I also have these sections and have tried both with them commented out, and left inline (but not explicitly disabled)

    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "on"
    EndSection

    Section "Extensions"
    Option "DAMAGE" "true"
    Option "RENDER" "true"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection

I have noticed the same. If I uninstall fglrx, performance is good again. I can't get fglrx to work properly neither with nor without Compiz .

I fixed this issue by running driconf and using the "TCL mode" was set to "Use hardware TCL as first..."

Together with F10+ current updates (nothing from Koiji, just regular updates) this gives a 1600 fps score in glxgears, and so far the UI seems snappier.

I'm getting OO crashes, but have now enabled opengl output (since that now works) so am hopeful.

Compiz still doesn't work through -- the result now is corrupted screen when compiz starts..

For clarification my device section now contains
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    Option "DynamicClocks" "1"
    Option "AccelDFS" "1"
    Option "DMAForXv" "1"
    Option "GARTSize" "64"
    Option "EnableDepthMoves" "on"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "VideoKey" "0x01"
    Identifier "Videocard0"

I also removed all keyboard/mouse definitions as my OO crash was in X keyboard function -- they're picked up through HAL anyway.

Here's mine. All I can say is that it works for me (except compiz). Try copying to /etc/X11/xorg.conf & rebooting

    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Default Layout"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    EndSection

    Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    EndSection

    Section "Module"
    Load "bitmap"
    Load "int10"
    Load "vbe"
    Load "glx"
    Load "dri"
    Load "extmod"
    EndSection

    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "on"
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    Option "DynamicClocks" "1"
    Option "AccelDFS" "1"
    Option "DMAForXv" "1"
    Option "GARTSize" "64"
    Option "EnableDepthMoves" "on"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "VideoKey" "0x01"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Videocard0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Virtual 3200 1600
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

    Section "DRI"
    Group 0
    Mode 0666
    EndSection

    Section "Extensions"
    Option "DAMAGE" "true"
    Option "RENDER" "true"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection

as per earlier post, run "driconf" afterwards & hopefully at least the basics work, including glxgears.
