    Pulseaudio - Multiple users

I'm having a bit of trouble with Pulseaudio in F9...I promise this is not another "I don't have any sound" thread...

I sometimes have my account logged in, and then start up Firefox under a second account (su - acct2) so that my girlfriend can use her own bookmarks/settings/etc without logging me out. I had this working in F7 before Pulseaudio, but can't get it figured out now. The user who owns the X session has working sound. The "guest" user gets nothing and I get this in the console:

*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused
*** Is your sound server running?
    *** See: http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/Troubleshooting
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1240: (_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card

I stumbled across this link talking about using executing pulseadio as a system-wide daemon, but I can't make it work with just the info provided there.

Has anyone ever tried this, or have any idea what I need to do to get sound for two users at the same time?

usermod -G audio (user of xsession)
    and
usermod -G audio (user which want share audio)

    do the trick for me

Note that you're replying to a thread that's from June of 2008.

Pulse audio was a lot worse then.

(Although it still holds--a user has to be added to the audio group, as /dev/snd/* is owned by root:audio).

Yes - there is a better solution.

I had the same problem - I am running iceweasel as a different user than the user I am logged in as for additional security.

As the main user, I copied /etc/pulse/default.pa to ~/.pulse/default.pa. I added:

    load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-ip-acl=127.0.0.1

As the second user, I created ~/.pulse/client.conf and added

    default-server = 127.0.0.1

With this configuration, when the second user launches an application that uses pulseaudio, it will connect to the first user's pulseaudio instance.

Just posting a /wave here from May 2012. This helped me solve the same issue with Fedora 16 ( had to suid a matlab instance, from within which I couldn't get soundsc to work ).

I am having a almost identical problem... But when no one is logged in!
That is playing sound from a background generated event, such as cron, at, mail arrival, and so on.
The machine is private so I do not need any form of user restriction.
