    Exclamation X Window System errors

    Hello,

    I have installed the NVIDIA driver (I have the 8600GT) on my Fedora 9 PC tonight and rebooted. However, now, whenever I load some programs (eg gnome-terminal and gnome-system-monitor) they show as 'loading' in my window selector however their GUIs do not show.

    If I load the programs from Konsole (remember that gnome-terminal won't load!) I get the following error messages

    $ gnome-system-monitor --sync
    The program 'gnome-system-monitor' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
    (Details: serial 125 error_code 8 request_code 78 minor_code 0)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
    that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
    To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
    option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
    backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

    $ gnome-terminal --sync
    The program 'gnome-terminal' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
    (Details: serial 145 error_code 8 request_code 78 minor_code 0)

    Many thanks for your help!

    I have the exact same problem and error messages after installing the nVidia driver.

    Do you have a dual monitor set up?

    Well I found a work around. It is a bug that has been around for a while - see here.

    It occurs when you enable Xinerama.

    I found some posts on the net that suggested adding the line below to all the devices and screen sections in xorg.conf:
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

    I tried this and it didn't work. I then changed Composite to "false" as per the bug report linked above:
    Section "Extensions"
    # disabled due to gnome-terminal X error 010608
    # Option "Composite" "Enable"
    Option "Composite" "false"

    I can open both gnome-terminal and System Monitor without any problems now.
