    Lightbulb 64-bit F9 / Nvidia card / xserver freezes

The 64-bit version of F9 freezes when xserver starts using startx. Mouse and keyboard locks. I have to power down to recover. I have used nv, vesa, nouveau, and nvidia drivers with the same result. The nvidia akmod is from livna. The system is up-to-date via yum update. xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files are in the attached zip. I have an HP Pavillion desktop d4100e with dual AMD 64-bit processors, 2 GB ram, and an Nvidia Geforce 6800 video card. This problem has existed since the initial F9 release.

The 32-bit version works fine. 32-bit and 64-bit Live CD versions also work.

In the 64-bit version, xinit and twm work.

After xserver locks in 64-bit, I have seen the machine lock when trying the same 32-bit and 64-bit Live Cds. It almost seems that the 64-bit version is doing something to the card (bios?) that affects it later. It does recover if I leave it powered down for a few minutes. There are some v_bios checksum errors in some of the logs.

I had run this by Hlingler in another thread starting with post #12: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=188241

Is there anything that I need to check? Is there a setting that needs to be fixed?

Is this problem a bug that I should report? If so, is it an xorg, nvidia, or fedora bug?

    Thanks in advance,
    Bob

    Retract above cause.
    Real problem identified.
USB port on monitor causes Xserver to freeze in F9 x86_64.

For a long time, I had a Logitech webcam plugged into a USB port on the HP f2105 monitor. For other reasons, I had unplugged the web cam from the monitor around the time that the latest kernel and nvidia driver were released. Xserver did start working and I could log in normally. However, when I plugged the web cam back into the monitor USB port, Xserver locked up again just as it had since the release of F9. I plugged the web cam into a port on the back of the desktop and Xserver worked fine. BTW, I have noticed that F9 x86_64 shows errors failing to enumerate some USB ports. I have USB ports on the front of the desktop and as mentioned 2 USB ports on the monitor itself.

Sounds like a bug report. Where should it be reported?

    Thanks,
    Bob

I followed this guide with nvidia legacy installer patched for 2.6.25. Everything seems to work, except that whenever (each and every time) I try to go to fedoraguide.info xorg crashes like clockwork. Here's a backtrace:

    Backtrace:

Anybody else experienced this or has an idea what might be causing it ? like what package might not have been downgraded or what mismatch could there be ?

I found the procedure in post #1 extremely helpful.

But at first, I was deceived by the bright red letters saying "no longer needed". I didn't realize that for older graphics cards, such as my nVidia GeForce4 MX 420, downgrading the X server still *is* needed. In retrospect, it is clear that this thread is only about the 173.08 driver series which is for newer cards -- but that information is not in red letters, so easily overlooked!

Oh, one other complication I encountered: before inbstalling Xoprg 1.3, I had to remove the package 'mesa-dri-drivers' as well as the other mesa and xorg packages.

Thank you very much for this excellent guide!

(By the way, the whole idea of downgrading my xorg was horrifying at first, and I had to do it twice to get it right -- silly mistake on my part -- but once done, I can see that it is not so horrible. And the results are great: 10x speedup of 3D graphics!)

For older NVIDIA cards, I have found these pages helpful:
    http://www.firewing1.com/content/view/88/52/
    http://fedoraforum.org/forum/printthread.php?t=193832
    http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=188241

For a GeForce4 MX420, I basically followed the procedure in post#1 in this thread,
with a couple of variations based on the URLs listed above:
    1. Some package names change by the addition of '-96xx'; for example
    kmod-nvidia -> kmod-nvidia-96xx. (For still *older* cards, I believe it's
    kmod-nvidia-legacy)
    2. The Livna repo has put the 96xx drivers in its testing repo, since they
don't work "out of the box" on Fedora 9 -- i.e., you have to downgrade
    the X server first. So,
    yum --enablerepo=livna-testing ...

Nick13ro: I have had no trouble browsing at that URL. (I don't know if you were addressing me; sorry if I've misunderstood.)

    One more proplem....

Hi evrybody... I have downgraded my X server as indicated above... but I had struck at following commands (32 bit processor )

    PHP Code:
    cd /tmp
    wget http
    ://www.dfm.uninsubria.it/compiz/nvidia/nvidia-x11-drv-173.08-1.fc9.i386.rpm
    yum --nogpgcheck localinstall nvidia-x11-drv-173.08-1.fc9.i386.rpm
    /usr/sbin/nvidia-config-display enable
    reboot
So, I was executed following commands
    [PHP]
    init 3
    ./NVIDIA.*.*.run
    init 5
    [PHP]

everything went fine and I can see 'nvidia' flashing...
Now my problem is in graphical mode I am not able to enter any character from keyboard...

but I can use some keys like "Cntrl+Alt+F2". Mouce is working fine....
What I am thinking that at the time of upgradation it missed one installation... please help me....
