Epson 1660 Scanner - SANE (or insane?)

I have an Epson 1660 scanner that I bought specifically to run on Fedora. All SANE documentation said it was compatible. This is my first scanner setup on Linux , and I have a couple of questions.

First of all the facts -

    Code:
    # sane-find-scanner
    Results -
    # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
    # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x011e [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:002
    # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
    # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

    # Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be
    # detected by this program.

    Code:
    # lsusb
    Results -

    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

    Code:
    # scanimage -L
    Results -

device `epson:libusb:001:002' is a Epson GT-8300 flatbed scanner
    ================================================== ========

    My questions are -

1.) I'd assume that I do not need a SANE-Epson backend because the scanner is recognized by SANE. Is this correct? Is the scanimage -L output of GT-8300 a problem?

2.) I started up GIMP and tried an aquire. It did not see any scanner devices. Why?

3.) Epson has a front end called iscan. It is supposed to be quite good and allows you to use the front buttons on the scanner. Can I just install it or do I need to do something else first? I found an RPM for it (iscan-1.9.0-5.redhat.8.0.i386.rpm) and also a tip on possible problems with 2.6 kernels ( I am on FC2 2.6.6-1.435) -

4.) Are there any other files or steps I need to take to get this scanner installed?

    Thanks for your time!

Getting FC3 to recognize Epson 1660 Photo Scanner

    Harryc,

I have the same scanner and use FC3. I also had the same problem.

Start by downloading the following pdf:

    support.epson.ru/upload/ library_file/11/scanner_linux.pdf

These instructions helped me. By the way for some reason page 3 sometimes crashes the pdf program. Just open the file back up and click past page 3,

Basically these are the things I did:

    1) downloaded and installed iscan from http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/index.html
    2) modified epkowa.conf to include the following lines
    usb /dev/usb/scanner0
    usb 0x04b8 0x011e
I also commented out the SCSI Epson line
    3) modified epson.conf to include the following lines
    usb 0x04b8 0x011e
again I commented out the SCSI Epson line

This worked for me, BUT only after I pulled the power from my scanner and then plugged it back in.

Both iscan and GIMP recognize my 1660 now.

    Hope this helps.

For some reason I have to power my scanner off/on each time I boot into FC3 in order for it to be recognized. Since the 1660 does not have a power switch, this means pulling the power and plugging it back in.

This is only a minor frustration. Right now I am happy just to have the use of scanner.
