    OpenOffice will not start [solved]

    Hello!

I've got a problem starting Writer, Calc and Impress on Fedora 8.
When clicking the Writer icon it tries to start but will shutdown after a while.
If i try starting these apps using cli I will get this:
    Code:
    [twn250@localhost ~]$ oowriter
/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/javaldx: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3: invalid ELF header
    /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/soffice: line 146: 5450 Segmentation fault "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
    [twn250@localhost ~]$ oocalc
/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/javaldx: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3: invalid ELF header
    /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/soffice: line 147: 5460 Segmentation fault "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
    [twn250@localhost ~]$ ooimpress
/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/javaldx: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3: invalid ELF header
    /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/soffice: line 147: 5470 Segmentation fault "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" "$@"
    [twn250@localhost ~]$
I have tried uninstalling OpenOffice and installing it again but with no luck.

What does "file /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3" report ?
Should be "/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), stripped"

What does "rpm -qf /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3" report ?
    Should *probably* be "openoffice.org-core-2.3.0-6.7.fc8".

If same rev then compare file size:
    ls -l /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1895372 2007-12-04 07:40 /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3

It's difficult to see how such a problem could occur if you used yum.

Thanks stevea for taking the time to help me!

    Here is the output:
    [twn250@localhost ~]$ file /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3
    /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3: data

This one (above) is the only one that differentiate from your setup.

    [twn250@localhost ~]$ rpm -qf /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3
    openoffice.org-core-2.3.0-6.7.fc8

    [twn250@localhost ~]$ ls -l /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1893572 2007-12-04 13:40 /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3

I agree, the only thing I have done to OpenOffice is adding swedish dictionary.
OpenOffice was installed with the installation of the system.

    I did a yum remove libuno_sal.so.3
And the result was that I removed all the OpenOffice packages.
I then Added OpenOffice in Add/Remove Software.
    Now everything works great.
I guess that when I removed OpenOffice from the Add/Remove Software before it did not remove the libuno_sal.so.3.

    [twn250@localhost ~]$ file /usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3
/usr/lib/openoffice.org/program/libuno_sal.so.3: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), stripped

    Thanks stevea for your help

I too am getting this segmentation fault. I've tried reinstalling. Not sure where the problem is. I'm running Fedora 10.

I have the same problem too, however it start after i download and install an update (from Kpackage..) for openoffice fedora 10. is therea way to uninstall that update?

Finally, I found a way to solve it. Here it is:
If you installed openoffice in /opt/openoffice.org and /opt/openoffice.org3/

    Go to /opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0

Replace the link: ure-link with a symbolic link (ln -s) with the same name but pointing to: /usr/lib/openoffice.org/ure (or whatever place that have this ure)

And that's it. (Hope it helps)

    Regards
    KBT

Thanks for the fix, finals week is not the time you want your office suite to quit on you!

    Thumbs up

Fair play... Just hit this issue myself, and this sorted it.

    Cheers

    Thanks warkbt!

I got into the same situation due to a FC9 -> FC10 upgrade.

I used the following series of commands
(as a summary for those in need):
    cd /opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0/
    sudo mv ure-link ure-linkBROKEN
    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/openoffice.org/ure ure-link

And soffice started working once again.
