It would look as if I don't have SDL installed, so I got the rpm file and tried to install, but just got:

    Code:
    [root@localhost Desktop]# rpm --install SDL-1.2.12-1.i386.rpm
package SDL-1.2.12-2.fc8.x86_64 (which is newer than SDL-1.2.12-1.i386) is already installed
Any ideas on what I am missing will be greatly appreciated.

I do not use lucview with my webcam. I've been usimg mplayer because it lets me set brightness and contrast.

gmplayer -tv driver=v4l:width=352:height=288 -vo gl -contrast 90 -brightness 12 -xy 2 -vf screenshot tv://&

    or for recording

    mencoder -tv driver=v4l:width=352:height=288 tv:// -o tv.avi -ovc raw

Be nice if mplayer could record or stream content. The filters are handy.

    Try

    su
    yum install SDL*devel

Leigh, that worked!!! Thanks a million!!
Plus the camera is finally working, though my face looks a little purple. Hope to fix that!
Hellork, why couldn't you adjust brightness, etc., with luvcview?

I have the same Omnivision 0x2640 webcam in my new Dell Vostro 1700 with Fedora 8. I'm afraid that kendew is much more proficient than I am, however, with regard to installing software.

In a root console, I used the command "yum install svn" and got the following output:

    Code:
    [root@localhost frank]# yum install svn
    Setting up Install Process
    Parsing package install arguments
Requested dep: svn is provided by installed package
    Nothing to do
    [root@localhost frank]#
I assume that this means that I have svn installed already.

I then looked for the lucview file, but it is not in the repository.

I have camstream installed, and I tried the install script from dangermouse, but while camstream is loaded, it does not find a device to use. I need a driver, but I don't know how to proceed.

My thanks to anyone who might know what to do from here.

    Frank.

    subversion is like ftp:

    Code:
    svn checkout http://svn.quickcamteam.net/svn/luvcview/trunk
Will get the code for you, then you have to enter the luvcview directory and type:

    Code:
    make
    make install
mines not working because of some dependency issue but I'm kinda getting tired of it. That should get you started.

Thanks for the post. I too have tired of this project, however, so I may not pursue it any further. I may be moving to another distro as well. While I love Fedora, it is too cutting edge for me to keep up with.

I hope that helped a little anyway. Trust me, though. I've tried every other distro of linux practically and this is the best. Ubuntu has the most ported software and is the easiest for most. But after you get set up and practiced, you'll start to notice that Fedora's more solid in a lot of ways, try configuring glx in Ubuntu and you'll see what I mean.

I just played the Quake 4 demo with direct rendering and I barely lifted a finger.

Oh, I know. Linux is Linux. What you gain with one distro, you lose with another. I am more concerned about configuring Samba, and that is torture in Fedora. I finally copied the smb.conf file from one of my old Xandros boxes, and that fixed it. Xandros was a dream as far as usability went. However, they have abandoned their desktop users in favor of small business, and their software repository is way too small.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the distros could get together and make one really good one.
