    repo conflicts

    Hello All

putting a new system together and want to avoid mistakes of the past
in past I've used both livna and the freshrpms repositories
this seem to have caused some conflicts when doing a "yum update"
problems with different versions of libs in the two
somewhere I've seen someone post directions on how to avoid this but I can't find them
could someone explain how to do it and exactly how the process works?

    TIA
    Dave

It is not easy. I only would enable one or the other and then update from that. Then you can enable the other and update from that one. But eventuly you will run into some road blocks. When i end up there i end up rebuild the troblesome rpms from their src.rpm counterpart and installing that so it matches my system files. One can spend many hours doing this. I myself finally removed not needed apps and libriaers. and have cleaner updates. Especially on a 64bit system, many 32bit versions are installed that are not needed. Some 32bit is required but not much.

Distribution: RHEL 5.1 with Pieces of this and that.
Kernel 2.6.23.9, KDE 3.5.8 and KDE 4.0 beta, Plus Development src.rpm, ATI fglrx64_7_1_0-8.433-1 rpm with 3D and DRI working.
Acer 5100-5840 with webcam, ati, sdcard reader, sound, atheros based wireless, all working. Only thing not working is the memory stick reader.

I found the instructions I had seen in the F8 unofficial FAQ
it say to issue these commands

    su -c 'yum install yum-protectbase'
    su -c 'perl -i -pe "s/(\[.*\])/\1\nprotect=yes/" /etc/yum.repos.d/{fedora*,livna*}'

can someone explain to me what that does??
