    Add/Remove Problem after upgrading F7 to F8

    Hello everyone:

I upgraded two laptops from F7 to F8. These two laptops are quite different in architecture and hardware. The upgrades went without incidents, but In both cases I have the same problem with Add/Remove software, Synaptic and yumex. When I start Add/Remove Software, I get the message "Another Application is currently running which is accessing software information", so I have to close it. When I run the pup updater, I get the same message. When I try yumex, I get the message: "yumex is locked by another application". In synaptic I see only the packages that are already installed, not the available ones. Everything else work great and I am not aware of any application that is running. Could it be one of the services that causes this problem perhaps?

Has any one seen this same problem? Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Same problem. Just used latest livecd to install in a VMware machine. Restarted twice after setup to make sure all configurations fine. Tried to use yum in terminal, got same message, tried menu option to Add software, same message about another process locking yum. Went in services and tried turning off updater service. Stopped it. Still got pid lock on yum. I am stopped cold, because I need to install devel packages and and additional.

Everything in Fedora8 looks good, networking fine. But this is a killer!

Now keep in mind I admit I have no idea what I'm doing.
    I went into /var/run and located yum.pid.
I opened it in su mode and deleted the process id 2210, whatever that was.
That was after stopping the updater service.
Then I started up the menu option Add Software and it started a download of software information......forever. The progress indicator went all the way over but 'downloading' seemed to go on for minute after minute. No way to access the menu options. Started the process again, same thing.
I do not know how to use command line yum. How can we get past this point?

yum-updatesd is running which is a tool that checks for updates at start up.

You can either wait for it to finish, which will either finish silently or by showing a popup message saying "you have X updates", or you can disable it at start up, i believe, through system > preferences > personal > sessions, and look for "yum-updatesd"
If you're not questioning my sanity, I'm not trying hard enough

    F7 upgrade problem

I stopped the yum-upgrade, which I found in System - Administration - Services, but the problem remained. I also stopped, one by one, a few other services, but again, no effect.

On my comp I got the process Id with the error message. Process 2210
killing the 2210 did not work but kill -9 2210 did.
Then you can use yum -y update I belive that fixed the problem for me.

I think my problem is solved. I deleted the yum.pid file in /var/run as root. It was not necessary to stop the yum-updates service. After a reboot, the problem sometimes recurred, and each time there was a new yum.pid file. Deleting it worked each time for me on both laptops.
