What's the error ? (terminal output)

Have compiz-fusion installed (or hah had it installed ?) : what is the version of emerald ? (rpm -q emerald)

Alternatively, try with another border decoration (aquamarine/kwin/...) from the beryl-icon.
Install XGL on Fedora, easily: Automatic Installation of XGL
NEW - propose to install compiz-fusion as well !

    X Server error

I follow your setup directions to a tee and after the reboot i get this error

Failed to start the X Server. It is likely that it is not setup correctly. Would you like the X Server output to diagnose the problem?

It goes on for a couple thousand more strings, essentially however it would seem that the driver is unable to be loaded and subsequently the X server fails. Any thoughts on a fix?

There is no ATI driver for a xen kernel so you have to use a normal kernel to get the driver working.

    mplayer/xine/ffplay performance problems since upgrade

    Hi Leigh,
I was very happy to stumble upon your excellent post, as I was having trouble getting my VisionTek X1550 to work on FC6, x86-64 with the latest ATI drivers. Going through the install worked fine and I made all the config tweaks you suggest (thank you!). GLXinfo looks good and I get 900FPS on glxgears:
    [sodo@ogre ~]# glxinfo | head -60
    name of display: :0.0
    display: :0 screen: 0
    direct rendering: Yes
    server glx vendor string: SGI
    server glx version string: 1.2
    server glx extensions:
    GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating,
    GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, GLX_OML_swap_method,
    GLX_SGI_make_current_read, GLX_SGIS_multisample, GLX_SGIX_hyperpipe,
    GLX_SGIX_swap_barrier, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig, GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer
    client glx vendor string: ATI
    client glx version string: 1.3
    client glx extensions:
    GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context,
    GLX_ARB_get_proc_address, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_ARB_multisample,
    GLX_ATI_pixel_format_float, GLX_ATI_render_texture
    GLX version: 1.2
    GLX extensions:
    GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context,
    GLX_ARB_multisample
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1300/X1550 Series
    OpenGL version string: 2.0.6650 (8.39.4)

But I seem to be experiencing the same issue as johnnylinux, where xine/mplayer/ffplay seem to be misbehaving (dropping frames (mplayer/ffplay) or crashing gnome (xine)). As you suggested to him, I have tried other video output options with mplayer with the same result. I am using this box as a video editing workstation, so I use these programs to test my edits. I have a dual, quad core xeon (dell sc1430). Previous to using the VisionTek card and the fglrx drivers, I was able to play these videos without problem on the mobo video (16MB ATI ES1000). Cinelerra, however, seems to be working well, as it takes advantage of my CPUs.

I use the ATI Catalyst Control Center to change my display settings. I've tried the three different display modes with the same poor performance/crashing behavior each time. I've attached a snap of the Control Center info. card info from ATI control center

Might you have seen this behavior before? Could it be degradation between 32-bit versus 64-bit modes? thanks for your time.

I went ahead and tested removing the 32bit libraries from the install:
    yum remove xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit

X still loads with my dual monitor setup; however, I still have my choppy video/hang/crash problem. I am running kernel-2.6.22-7 on fc6 x86_64:

    [sodo@ogre ~]# rpm -qa --queryformat "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}.%{ARCH}\n"|grep kernel|sort
    kernel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.x86_64
    kernel-2.6.22.7-57.fc6.x86_64
    kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.x86_64

I've rolled back to driver version 8.35.5 and the choppy behavior is gone, but now I no longer have direct rendering enabled.

I'm getting good at installing these ATI driver installs. >:[

    8.35.5:
-mplayer works well in XV, but I have no OpenGL
    8.36.5
-mplayer doesn't work well in XV, and the kernel module won't build, so I can't get OpenGL to work
    8.40.4
-mplayer doesn't work well in XV, but works OK in OpenGL. Obviously, I got the kernel module to build for 8.40.4 by installing that driver and building and installing the kernel module using:
    ./ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Fedora/FC6
    rpm -ivh kernel-module-ATI-fglrx-2.6.22.7-57.fc6-8.40.4-1.fc6.x86_64.rpm

I imagine this will suffice for now.

ATI needs to get their act together.

Thanks for the info, Leigh! It helped get me started..

Could someone please give me a rundown on what is needed to get Compiz up and running on F8 (x86_64 7.92) under KDE? I can only find instructions for earlier versions, and it looks like the devel repo might be missing some packages to get things running in K.
