    cs46xx and logitech quickcam messenger

I found a bug with this combination of hardware. Sound will not work when quickcam messenger is plugged in. I took out entries for the quickcam in /etc/modprobe.conf and rebooted but still loaded the sound modules for it. When I do the sound card detection, it sees my cirrus logic but no pcm device. Alsamixer only displays the quickcam settings. I tried alsamixer -c 1 but nope. only way i could make sound work was to unplug the quickcam messenger. Oh by the way, PCLinuxOS does not have a problem with this setup (not trying to start a flame but I just wanted to state the fact.)

    Fedora Core release 6 (Zod)
    Linux 2.6.19-1.2911.fc6 #1 SMP Sat Feb 10 15:03:33 EST 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24/30 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)

here is lsmod with quickcam PLUGGED IN. notice how snd_cs46xx is loaded but not being used.

    Hi slamp,
I've been having similar problems with a usb webcam and my via sound card, as there is a race between the initialisation of the 2 sound devices.
I've created a bug report https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=229227 and included one possible solution but it doesn't map the oss devices properly. I have one old app ( quake ) that (sometimes) can't see the default sound device using that method.

Are you seeing messages in your log file like these ?
    Code:
cannot find the slot for index 0 (range 0-0)
VIA 82xx Audio: probe of 0000:00:11.5 failed with error -12
if it is the same problem you could just try setting
    options snd_usb_audio index=1
in /etc/modprobe.conf to try get the web cam to map into the 2nd sound slot and not collide with the default sound card.
I'm still looking into this and would like to find a general soloution

    HTH
    Cheers
    Richard

yes i was actually getting that message also. i originally had options snd_usb_audio index=1 in my /etc/modprobe.conf but i took it out just so to load only my sound card and not my webcam but it didn't work. it's quite odd that it is not working in fedora but it works with pclinuxos. ill post my pclinuxos modprobe.conf when i get home today.

    this is from my pclinuxos.

    # cat /etc/modprobe.conf

    install snd-cs46xx /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-cs46xx && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-cs46xx

I have been trying to get my logitech notebook pro webcam to work and ran into the same problem. I was not getting any hardware to show up in "PCM DEVICE". I did not save the previous "cat /proc/asound/cards" but the usb and ich5 devices were swapped before - usb was indexed as 0. Well the AC97 audio is supposed to be 0 because the following entry
was already in my modprobe.conf file.

    alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
    options snd-intel8x0 index=0
To fix this in /etc/modprobe.conf I added:

    alias snd-card-2 snd_usb_audio
    options snd_usb_audio index=1
entering the usb as snd-card-2 and forcing it to index as 1 in /proc/asound/cards. Here are the full listings of the 2 files after edits, with working sound.

    [stephen@macbeth ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.conf
    alias eth0 8139too
    alias eth1 bcm43xx
    alias net-pf-10 off
    alias ipv6 off
    options snd cards_limit=8
    alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
    options snd-intel8x0 index=0
    alias snd-card-1 snd-intel8x0m
    options snd-intel8x0m index=1
    alias snd-card-2 snd_usb_audio
    options snd_usb_audio index=1

    [stephen@macbeth ~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [ICH5 ]: ICH4 - Intel ICH5
Intel ICH5 with unknown codec at 0xd0000c00, irq 16
    1 [U0x46d0x8cb ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x8cb
USB Device 0x46d:0x8cb at usb-0000:00:1d.7-4, high speed
Now if I could only get my webcam to work!

    ....patience Grasshopper...
...What if there were no hypothetical questions?

good to hear that it works
but might there be an issue with having 2 sound devices set to index=1 ?

I've got a logitech pro 5000 webcam that works (some of the time anyway) with the driver from http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/
