Have you tried Xine and picking the VCD option? Also how is xine configured (you actually need to tell xine which your CD device is under the media tab in the configuration window).
If ain't broken, don't fix it!
If can be improved, go for it!

You might not have all the codecs....

Read the readme file in this archive it will tell you where to put the files. Both mplayer and xine can use these windows codecs.

I convert vcds to dvd's then i can play them anywhere

    vcdimager-0.7.23-3.lvn6

then run vcdxrip /dev/hdc if hdc is your cd rom/dvd drive

when finished you have a mpeg file

I'm fighting with this issue myself, as my daughter watches a lot of Cartoons on VCD's, but so far I wasn't able to run any VCD from Xine/Mplayer gui. But I managed to run it from the terminal using Mplayer. I don't remember the exact commands to do it, but I have them stored somewhere on my home computer, so I'll post them as soon as I get home. It isn't perfect, as I cannot figure out the commands to allow smooth playing in stretched fullscreen, but I didn't have the time to work on it for some time - it is definitely possible.

I checked it one more time today, and it seems that even the resizing works wit no additional options, maybe it's thanks to one of the Mplayer/Kernel updates that I made recently. The code to play VCD's with Mplayer is:
    Code:
    mplayer vcd://XX -cdrom-device /dev/YYY
you choose a chapter by changing XX into 01,02,03 etc. (most VCDs that I've tried had the main movie in chapter 02) and your cd-rom device by changing YYY into an appropriate device from /dev (it was dvd in my case)

I hope this helps at least a little.

Using smplayer (or any other mplayer front end) will make things simpler.

    Code:
    yum install smplayer
