A fresh Fedora Core 6 installation

    Hey there

I just wanted to find out from anybody out there
when I install the Fedora Core 6 i386 version on my
64-bt machine, what nVidia drivers would I need so as not
    to have my system freeze.

I have a BioStar M-9 with the 6100 nVidia GeForce onboard
chipset and so far every-time I've insatlled Linux, I get a system
freeze after 10 minutes. It started with Fedora Core 5, I then tried
Suse 10.0, then I tried Ubuntu 6.06 64-bit version and lately
    I've tried BLAG-50002.

I've even done a kernel update but my machine still freezes after 10
minutes which results in me installing Windows XP again, but Windows
XP is giving me problems continuously, no suprise there.

Only problems I have with Linux is my system freezes and when I use
MPlayer in BLAG for example the frame/sec is slow and the system freezes
to such an extend that I have to physically reboot my system.

I'm getting FC6 tomorrow in a magazine Linux Format, I believe it will be the
i386 version because that's the standard release here in most magazines.
Problem is I don't have internet at home so doing a Livna nVidia graphics
update is not possible, but if someone knows which files I need to
download for my specific machine I would really appreciate it.

Are you sure that is not a hardware problem?

lbdev, I don't own a 64 bit pc, so I'm not sure if I'm going to be way off base here, but have a look at this: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC6Common, which is related to what d347hmn4 is telling you. Scroll to where talk is of common issues. I'm thinking that maybe you got the wrong kernel installed. linux i686 at the install command line is correct but doesn't always work as it should. Following the instructions under common issues does. I can attest to that having done it several times.

if you have the wrong kernel installed then....
    >yum install yum-utils
    >yumdownloader kernel.i686 kernel-devel.i686
this will download latest kernel available for i686
    >rpm -Uvh --replacefiles --replacepkgs kernel-name.rpm kernel-devel.rpm
    Than try to install drivers....

    Smile Installation Succes but..

Thanks for the replies, it all works. I'm running the FC6 i386
    version on my 64-bit machine.

FC6 runs like a bomb. However being a newbie and having jumped
ship from WinXP there are still a couple of things I'd like to know.

In XP you get a dvd decrypter for times when I need to backup my
playstation games how this works is I decrypt my game and then burn
the backup to disc. Decrypter is a useful utility in the sense that you
can make backups of your dvd's as well by reading the ifo file and then
afterwards compressing the ifo with a tool called AutoGordianKnot.
But now my question whether there are similar tools available in FC6 that I could
download and does anyone have a link to these tools.

Another problem is watching movies, when I try to open any movie file format
in Totem I get an error message about missing libraries. So I thought about getting
vlc for linux cause I've heard of it but am not sure which files I'll need to download
to get it to work on my machine.

My last problem hopefully is playing games on FC6, now I've heard of Cedega, however
the problem with Cedega is that it's entirely free and I can't purchase it
online because as a student I don't have the neccesary accounts to do
transfers over the internet, so I wanted to know whether there is an alternative
to Cedega out there somewhere because the only thing that keeps me going back
to windows is that at the moment.

But thank you in advance for those reading my post.
I enjoy the Linux experience entirely because usually
someone might have had the similar problem so they are able
to help whereas with Microsoft customer care you call and get redirected
so many times that you lose interest after holding for 2hours.

To play games in xp, install wine, and you can try and install dvd-decypter through wine aswell. I recommend you find cedega on torrent's somewhere. Go over to stanton-finley.net, that should cover your multimedia problems
