    Hello:
The problem is that yum-updatesd is running as well.
You need to disable this service
    from a terminal type system-config-services
    log in
    and disable system-config-services
    Save, exit
reboot and when FC comes back up open a terminal log in as root using
    su -
    yourpassword
    yum clean all
    then
    yum - y update yum
and you should be good to go

I have a similar problem. I followed the instructions from Seve and got the following message:

    #yum -y update yum
rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery
error: db4 error(-30977) from dbenv->open: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

    idx = ts.dbMatch('provides', distroverpkg)
    TypeError: rpmdb open failed

I have one machine running FC-5 and running FC-6 and both give the same message. Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Ken K.

when yum-updatesd was enable did you have the same issue ?
    when i get this error
Existing lock /var/run/yum.pid: another copy is running. Aborting.
    i just do
    # ps -e | grep yum
    # kill xxxx
where xxxx = is the process id that ps returned to you
and then you can run yum
    try enabling yum updatesd again...

    Hello:
I think what you have may be a different issue that other's have had as well. [I believe it's related to 2 versions of python?]
Can you post the output of:
    rpm -aq | grep -F python-devel
    and
    rpm -aq | grep -F python-2

error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - (-30977)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

    [root@Ken1 media]# rpm -aq|grep -F python-2

rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery
error: db4 error(-30977) from dbenv->open: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - (-30977)

Try this, it should take care of the problem:

    rm /var/lib/rpm/__db*
    rpm --rebuilddb
    yum clean all

    Good Luck.

I just had this same issue, and your post helped me get back on track. Thanks for your reply and solution to the initial issue.
