Problems with GDM rying to log into console mode

Hello,

I've just installed FC5 and modified my inittab so that it starts are run level 5 instead of run level 3. I tried setting up inittab to run gdm at run level 5.

Now for some reason the linux starts up in the blue screen but goes on to display the XDM login screen. Then no matter what I try I cannot login into X. The XDM accepts my username and password, then the screen blanks out for awhile and then the login screen reappears.

I would like to know I can I boot into single user mode from the boot loader (I'm using GRUB,) so that I can modify my inittab file. Also, could someone please tell me where I went wrong.

Booting to single user mode:
When in GRUB menu, hit "A" to change the kernel command line. Replace the "rhgb quiet" at the end with "single", then hit Return to boot.
You went wrong if you made any other changes to /etc/inittab than changing the default run level. GDM is started on run level 5 without any changes to inittab.

Thanks for the help.
I did change both the initial line from:
id:3:initdefault:
to
id:5:initdefault:

and then changed:
x:5:once:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
to
x:5:norespawn:/usr/bin/gdm -nodaemon

and then changed:
x:5:once:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
to
x:5:norespawn:/usr/bin/gdm -nodaemon

Change that part back to the original version.
