Ati Dual Head + Fglrx How To

This tutorial assumes that you already have the fglrx drivers installed, if you don't follow the directions here
BUT READ THIS FIRST: This is a problem that i had while trying to install the fglrx drivers because i have a dual head setup. You need to unplug your second monitor while you are isntalling the fglrx drivers, and do not plug it in untill you have finnished all the steps in that how to. Then once you have finnished all the steps in the how to, restarted x, then you can plug your monitor back in. Then do this. (also do not go into system-config-display to change settings, for some reasosn this will set you back to the radeon drivers.)

DUAL HEAD: Ok, you need to open up a terminal

    su -
Now type this in the terminal
( this is assuming that you want dual head spanning horizontal)
    aticonfig --dtop=horizontal --overlay-on=1

    then

    aticonfig --desktop-setup=horizontal

    Then restart x.

if you want to see what other options you can do then just type aticonfig.

    I needed one more step

Following the above process got both monitors to light up, but both were still displaying the same desktop - not truly dual-head.

To get dual head to really work, with each monitor showing a unique desktop, I had to also enter this on the command line:
    aticonfig --initial=dual-head --screen-layout=right

Note - the --screen-layout value controls where the placement of the second monitor is. It can be 'above' 'below' 'left' or 'right'.

    Thanks again

Is it possible to run dual head with different resolutions?
I have a laptop capable of running a screen resolution of 1440x900 (using its ATI Mobility Radeon X2300). I have a desktop screen connected that is capable of running 1280x1024.

So far I have managed to get the screen run either the desktop aspect ratio or the laptop aspect ratio but not a combination of the two. First of all, should it be possible to have a dual head config running both screens at the optimum resolution or and I searching for something that is not yet possible?

    Cheers,

    Andy.

I have put all that I had to do to get dual monitor working at http://sensiblerationalization.blogs...ra-10-and.html. I do not know why xrandr and xinerama setting had to be modified in my case when other folks dont seem to have needed it. I am yet to setup different resolution but this set up drained me so much that I am not feeling like doing it. I hope ATI really invests some time in being sync with what's going in linux world.
