    Thumbs up Brasero - burning software for GNOME

    Some time ago somewhere I read that Fedora development community was looking for a gnome burning software, that could be default burning app in the Fedora Core. I don't know whether they have found it yet or not, or ceased to find, but I think there is one that can stand in this place. It is called Brasero, though it was not always so - so you may know it as bonfire. Though its web pages are not very good (my personal opinion) it is the best burning application for gnome I have ever met. It is not however as good as k3b but is for our beloved gnome and it is damn small if compared to k3b.

    I think the best url I can post here is the brasero record at gnomefiles.org. But if you want to go directly to the homepage, here it is: http://perso.orange.fr/bonfire/. Recently I noticed the sources moved from sourceforge to gnome cvs. I wonder if that means something... Maybe brasero is going to be part of gnome in the future? There is only one problem I see with this precious application, but which will be solved in a month, when FC6 will be finally out - it needs among other requisites gstreamer version 0.10.6 at least, whereas FC5 has only 0.10.4. If you don't mind that it can't be able to burn audio cds, the problem with gst version can be solved - simply edit the config files to look for older version. I talk about configure (or configure.in if you use development version). If you want details on this matter ask.

    So go test it, discuss about it and help the author to improve it by reporting bugs, asking for features and so forth, or even by helping with source creating. I think you'll like it, especially when fedora core 6 is out, and will be finally able to replace k3b, if you don't use kde.

    PS: I wonder, when it will be in extras or livna

    EDIT: Problem solved - Audio CD can be burned even under FC5. All you have to do is to install new gstreamer from gstreamer.freedesktop.org. The easiest way is to set up repositories - download gstreamer-0.10-gst.repo and gstreamer-0.10-deps.repo form there and copy them to /etc/yum.repos.d and then simply run yum update. For more info look at http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/download/fedora5.html

    Just installed it - didn't find any dependency issues on the .rpm with FC-5 and installed quickly with 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' . Unfortunately, it's not signed, so yum localinstall did not work. I'll post back on how it works. Well, just a quick chance to play with it and I must say that it's a very compact program but it did an excellent job on the couple of tests I ran. The CD ISO that I burned was very fast and easy to configure and did handle burn-proof well. I don't know that it will replace K3B, but it's a very good application program.

    You must have newer gstreamer than that in fedora core 5? Or there is some dependency problem with the package. I looked on the source packages of bonfire-0.4.1 and brasero-0.4.4 and both required gstreamer-devel >= 0.10.6 at build time (in fedora 5 the newest is 0.10.4, in FC6T3 is 0.10.9), so I suppose it needs this gstreamer version in run-time as well? Maybe that author forgot to add the gstreamer dependency, because he thought that rpmbuild will solve it? Or did you installed some other rpm than that from sourceforge? I personally use the development version, so I built my own rpm with the old gst version, but it will not burn audio cd (I tried it with some mp3 files). Will it burn audio cd for you?

    I simply went to the homepage, clicked on the download and installed the .rpm version which installed fine in FC5. As far as the audio, haven't tried that. Let's see.... Got to be honest, I've searched my machine and currently don't have a single .wav file to try it with - all the stuff's in .mp3 format and I don't have time tonite to try converting some over to .wav to try burning. That's one nice thing with k3b, it handles it automatically and I've got a bit away from the old methods of 'mlame' ,etc.

    Ok, I checked the requisites of the binary rpm and found that it needs libgstreamer-0.10.so.0. From this I would guess it needs gstreamer-0.10.x, so either the gst version >=0.10.6 is needed only during build, or the author didn't add the dependency to the rpm.

    Add these files to %files section of the brasero.spec.
    Code:

    These are somewhere in the /tmp (I think). Rpmbuild uses different root than / to installing files to before adding them into the package.

    Where did you get this packages? They are newer than that in core/update/livna repo for FC5.

    Thanks a lot, but isn't it a repo for flashplayer plugin? I already found the new gst rpms on http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/ and they say their packages comply with core/extras/livna repos which I use. These packages really works.

    Okay on that - sorry about the mislead again; I was inside FC6-T3 and grabbed the wrong thing. Back in FC5 now and here's the gstreamer.repo:

    [gst-0.10-gst]
    name=GStreamer 0.10 - extras - $releasever - $basearch - gst
    baseurl=http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/pkg/fedora/$releasever/0.10/$basearch/gst/
    enabled=1

    [gst-0.10-apps]
    name=GStreamer 0.10 - extras - $releasever - $basearch - applications
