Question Sound issue - Intel HDA

Yesterday I installed Fedora Core 5 on a notebook, and there is no sound on the notebook. I am not a Linux expert, and it is the first time doing multumedia on a linux installations.

The notebook is based on the Intel 945NG Chipset, and utilises the Sigmatel STAC9200 CODEC for HD sound.

When I use headphones I can hear a very very faint noise when I play music. When I am unplugging the headphones, there is no sound at all, not that I can hear. All the volume controls have been tested at max, min etc. No change.

    Code:
    # lsmod | grep snd

I have read many posts around on this and other forums, regarding issues with 82801G (IHC7) Intel HDA sound, but my card does seem to be detected. In alsamixer it states that it is a Intel HD card and uses a STAC9200 chip.

The available options that I have in alsamixer is:
Master , PCM, Capture , Input So

Under input there is only the option "mic". I have checked gnome-volume-control preferences and kmix settings. I have tested with headphones, and checked that all settings are unmuted.

    Code:
    # cat /etc/modprobe.conf
    alias eth0 b44
    alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix
    #alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    #options snd-card-0 index=0
    #options snd-hda-intel index=0
    #remove snd-hda-intel { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel
Note: The comments ("#") I have added myeself, this had no change on the sound in any way.

Again, I use Fedora Core 5 Final, it has Alsa 1.0.11rc2 and the Kernel 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp

I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.

I have the same issue. Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9400. Soundcard is detected, snd_hda_intel loads with no errors but no sound. I've been running FC4 on this system with sound working for about 5 weeks. I upgraded to FC5 and the sound no longer works. Same exact problem as CHJ.

Note: The headphone jack did not disable speaker output when you plugged in the headphones in FC4 but the sound played in both headphones and speakers.

Open the Settings Tab of the Mixer Applet.

    Check [x] External Amplifier

Then look that in your tab the checkbox is selected too...

    perhaps it helps

    Issue found

Looks like this is reported in Fedora bugzilla as bug 182940

    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=182940

Which points to ALSA bug 1843 (with fix)

    https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/al...ew.php?id=1843

    Thanks for your help.

Thumbs up Patch from Fedora bugzilla bug

I contacted Umar from the bug I linked to earlier. He was kind enough to provide me with the patch he used to resolve the problem. It worked perfectly for me as well.

Grab the 2.6.16 FC source RPM from a mirror (under testing) and apply the attached patch. Build and install the patched kernel and away you go!

    Thanks Umar!

Great stuff. I did manage to get this patch working. Took me a little while to get the hang of the Kernel Source. I have not used a kernel src RPM in Fedora. But great stuff. Finally I have some sound.

I have no idea how to apply a patch. What I did was goto http://www.alsa-project.org/ and download the 1.0.11rc4 drivers and libraries. I compiled IAW http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...dule=hda-intel

Rebooted and to my amazment my sound card worked. I have a Sony Vaio FE550 and the mute button above the key board even works. The only thing I cant get to work are the volume buttons.

SouthPaw, thanks! It works for me on my Dell Dimension 3100!

Just had to install the kernel-smp-devel rpm for the kernel source:

    yum install kernel-smp-devel

Alright, I applied Shoemael's patch to the 2.6.16 kernel. It works, but there's a few problems. They seem to be associated with software suspend, so I'm not sure if the problem is with suspend or alsa. After I suspend, the sound doesn't work anymore, but muting then unmuting fixes it. However, after a suspend, the headphones don't work anymore, even after muting. If I plug them in, sound just keeps playing through the speakers. Right after booting, everything works fine though, something happens when I suspend.

I have these installed on my Sony Vaio SZ. It uses the Sigmatel codec for the HDA.
    alsa-lib.i386 1.0.11-3.rc2.2 installed
    alsa-tools.i386 1.0.10-2.fc5 installed
    alsa-utils.i386 1.0.11-4.rc2 installed

    Kernel is 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp.

I can see the channels in the Volume control, and they are all unmuted. The Sound Card Detection programme says that an Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller is installed, using the only available PCM device: HDA Generic. /root/scsound.log says:

    # cat scsound.log

OK - Got the sound partially working. It only plays out of the headphones when plugged into the 3.5mm headphone jack. The sound is never routed out of the builtin speakers. This works in WXP.

How did you compile it? I am trying the "Howo compile a kernel as a non-root user" instructions found here on the on fedoraforum.org site (link). Basically, I'm:

Using fedora-rpmdevtools-1.6-1.fc5 I am creating a rpmbuild directory in my non-root-user's home directory by running 'fedora-buildrpmtree'. Then, logged in as that user, I am running rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.16-1.2129_FC5.src.rpm (this is the kernel I have installed at present). I then cd into the SPECS directory and run 'rpmbuild -bp --target=i686 kernel-2.6.spec. This applies the RedHat/Fedora patches to the kernel tree. I then create a symbolic link under BUILD/kernel-2.6.16 called linux-2.6.16 pointing to linux-2.6.16.i686 (otherwise the patch file I found will not here work). I apply that patch 'patch -p0 < /path/to/patch/file', which complains a bit about two files, both of which seem to be for hardware I do not have so I didn't worry too much about it. According to the HOWTO referenced above, I change the EXTRAVERSION= label. I don't want to change any of the options (whatever the fedora kiddies picked is what I want -- I want something as close to the fedora-built kernel as possible), so I skip the menuconfig step. I then do a 'make rpm', which after a few minutes asks me to do a make oldconfig (apparently there are a few prompts it didn't expect). I answer "yes" to the two things it didn't know about (sounded like do I want oss support for a few drivers), and then re-do 'make rpm'. It cranks for 50 minutes and then dies complains that a directory (/var/tmp/kernel-2.6.16.19-root/modules/blah) is missing.

I'm not sure why I included all my steps above -- because I'm more interested in finding out what worked for you (what instructions did you follow?) versus have you/others debug my steps ... but now that I've spent 10 minutes typing it in I'll leave it there.

Software-controlled headphone jack seems to be the new in-thing, so everyone is doing it. There seem to be lots of bugs filed in alsa bug tracker that are related to this problem.
Workaround: try to boot with headphones unplugged, or if it doesn't help, try to boot into windows (if you still have the windows partition left over with the drivers) and unplug the headphones once there. Then reboot and you'll have speakers.
