Fedora 15 Power Management - Where is it?

I can't find any proper power management options on Fedora 15, only really basic simple options under the Advanced tab of the Screensaver.

Where can I change the Power Management settings in F15?

I'd like to set it so that...
    - screen powers down on closing the lid only, else never powers down / or after a certain time.
    - the machine never powers down, either on AC or on battery.
    - screen dims on battery after some time, but no on AC.
    - hard drive never powers down.

...I previously used Fedora 14 and earlier version on my laptops, and could easily set these power management either through the Screensaver, or directly from another menu.

    Thanks for any help.

Also, I enabled the "Blank Screen Only" mode in the Screensaver, and disabled the "Lock Screen After", but it still asks for a password after some time. How can I stop that?

Re: Fedora 15 Power Management - Where is it?

Hello? Is there really no way we can do Power Management in Fedora 15 like we could do in Fedora 14 and before?

If we can't at the GUI anymore, how about at the command line? I only assume the GUI previously in F14 was setting some setting through the kernel, so I'd guess these feature would still be available in F15, even if there is no longer a Power Management GUI.

I'm really quite stuck. If any one could help me I'd be really grateful.

gnome-tweak-tool helps a wee bit. gconf-editor is even better.

Thanks for your reply wneumann. How do I access them? I can't find anything under "Applications" if I search for "tweak" or "gconf" etc., and I can't find either names at the command line.

For a start I'd like to set it so that the screen powers down on closing the lid only but the machine itself doesn't power down, so it still runs when the lid is closed, but of course running saving power with the screen turned off.

I found an application from selecting "System Settings" and then selecting "Power", but it has nowhere near the features that were accessible and setable in Fedora 14 and earlier. - For e.g. I can't disable sleep mode when the lid is shut.

gnome-power-manager is not installed on the system. Either use Add/Remove Software to add it or use the command on terminal
    Code:
    su -c "yum install gnome-power-manager"
    Hope that helps.

Re: Fedora 15 Power Management - Where is it?

    Thanks, I've done that now.

I tried looking for it everywhere under 'Applications' but can't find it, and it's not under 'System Settings' either, only the same old Fedora 15 "Power" which doesn't even do basic Power Management stuff. A bit of a joke really.

If I try to run it at command line, it gives a pid, like [1] 1234, but then it says [1]+ Exit 1 gnome-power-manager.

How can I run it? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Look in the Gnome top menu:

    System-> Preferences -> Power Management

    That's where I see it

I can't see anything by the name of 'System', 'Preferences' or 'Power Management' anywhere on the screen. Where about do you see that?

I can see 'Activities' on the top bar on the left, got the date in the middle, and got the username on the right, with some icons to the left of it; Access Settings, Volume, Bluetooth, Network, and Battery.

I looked in 'Applications' under Activities, but cannot find it. But surely, I could run it from the command line too anyway(?).

I found nothing doing a search for "Power" under Applications either.

From the dropdown menu under the username in the top right, I only get the System Settings that's relevant (and other things like Lock Screen etc.), but that leads to the "Power" gui that doesn't really offer even basic power management settings.

BTW. I tried to run gnome-power-manager as a non-admin user from the terminal earlier, and it just closes. Now I just tried to run it as root, it does nothing for about 10 secs, and then it says Segmentation fault (core dumped).

Ok, I just installed both with yum, I don't know about the gconf-editor, looks a bit complicated, but with gnome-tweak-tool I could set it so the machine doesn't power down when the lid is closed and so that only the screen is turned off.

So, one big part complete. But now to figure out how to stop the hard disk from spinning down when idle. gnome-tweak-tool doesn't enable this setting.

I need to deploy a bunch of laptops and measure sudden bursts of network traffic, and if the hard disk powers down, a huge load of packets is dropped which is unacceptable, - cannot test the network. If I can't do this, may have to go back to Fedora 14.

Could do both these tasks in the basic power management in Fedora 14 and earlier. Don't know why they removed them and made it much more complicated in the new Fedora.

Yeah, can easily be done in Fedora 14 and Fedora 13. Am thinking of going back to it as Fedora 15 doesn't even have basic power management functions like what happens on close lid, or spinning down the hard drive or not.

Re: Fedora 15 Power Management - Where is it?

I don't usually use Gnome at all since KDE4 to me is way better for user configuration, but I think this
page is for Gnome 3 and it has help specific to power issues: (see section called "Power and Batteries")

    http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome...rdware.html.en

Meh, I just took a look at that, mostly it's the Gnome project explaining what Gnome 3 does and
why that's they way it's done

Yeah, can easily be done in Fedora 14 and Fedora 13. Am thinking of going back to it as Fedora 15 doesn't even have basic power management functions like what happens on close lid, or spinning down the hard drive or not.
I just switched from Ubuntu 11.04 to F15.
However, after a bit of experiment over the web, I installed tweak tools, and now my laptop doesnt go to sleep when I close the lid.
But when I open the lid after 4 hours, (I close it at night while I download torrents through Ktorrent) It asks for login, and after login, I see that all the downloads had stopped!

I installed gnome-power-manager but I could not open it (through GU I / terminal).
I ran across http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome...oselid.html.en, but when I put the commands in terminal, it says:

    [Busybox@busyboxhost ~]$ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugin.power lid-close-ac-action blank
    No such schema 'org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugin.power'
    [Busybox@busyboxhost ~]$ su -
    Password:
    [root@busyboxhost ~]# gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugin.power lid-close-ac-action blank
    No such schema 'org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugin.power'
    [root@busyboxhost ~]#

    Help me out!

Re: Fedora 15 Power Management - Where is it?

    To list available schemas:
    Code:
    gsettings list-schemas | sort
To list available keys for a schema:
    Code:
    gsettings list-keys org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
To view the value of a key:
    Code:
    gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action
To see the possible values that you can set a key to:
    Code:
    gsettings range org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action
To set the value of a key:
    Code:
    gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action "suspend"
